Using video files from a remote web server
#1
I am looking to set up XBMC on a few portable devices, but I don't want to store the videos and such locally. Is it possible to access my external hard drive via https or ftps? I have it set up through my router as a ReadyShare with web access to the drive, but I haven't found a way to get XBMC to recognize the location over the internet. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, if you need more info, let me know.

Yeah, you just have to manually input the address for the web or FTP directory as a video source. When you click on "add videos" just type in the URL into that first box. You don't even have to hit "browse". If there's a password involved then the URL will look something like

https://user:pass@host/whatever/etc/

Unfortunately I have tried that. I have used https and ftp, but no luck. The https way at least won't give me an error message initially, but when it goes to scan the directory to load the files, it doesn't come up with anything. The ftp connection method doesn't even recognize the server it's connecting to. Is there something I need to change? the https method is set up like "https://65.xx.xxx.xxx/shares/USB_Storage/Movies". Should I be trying a different way?

Does it work in a browser?

Yes, it allows me to access it as a directory. Is that perhaps why? Is it not reading the m as actual files and more like downloadable links?
