I have put a pi in the car with raspbmc. Is there anyway to make it a wifi router also so my son can control it with his ipod and no IR remote?

Don't believe the pi has any wireless capabilities, so you would need some sort of dongle. Your best option may be to get a Bluetooth adapter and see if there are any XBMC remote apps that work through bluetooth instead of wifi.

Now that is a great idea.
Get a raspbmc running, add a bluetooth dongle for control and a 32 or 64g usb for music videos, put a 7" screen in front of it.
