Is there anyway you could exchange it? The VIA chipset in that model is really going to hold it back.
From the same range you'd be better off with something like the ZOTAC ZBOX Nano AD12

I bought it on sale for a very good price, thought it was going to be good enough to play 1080p movies and HD sound..
But wont the USB soundcard be sufficient enough ?

You won't get HD sound from an external USB soundcard, so you'll likely be limited to Dolby Digital with some maybe supporting DTS, so you need to research exactly what they are capable of passing through to a AVR.
