Nice. Which one works better?

Good. So that one basically has 13.6 fglrx driver and uses similar xbmc code as wsnipex xvba frodo. So - you could have luck following the XVBA installation howto (1) (start with 12.10 quantal 64 bit mini.iso) and update the driver afterwards to 13.6 beta (2).

Will give that a try and see what happens. [EDIT: Tried 12.10 64 bit mini and would not detect network devices at install time, 12.10 32 bit mini is the same.]

Last time I had 13.6 installed there was an AMD logo in the bottom right corner of the screen. Any way to get rid of that?

Really appreciate your help so far Smile

For what it is worth, I liked the openelec experience, it is kind of what I had in mind when I first started messing around with ubuntu / xbmc. Over the journey I've become accustomed to having ubuntu there and regularly use it. My next mini project is to get something like MythTV working so I can use the same computer (does not have to be from within XBMC) to capture video from Hauppage HD PVR. If I can find a way to do that in Openelec then I may just change over.

If you look more in detail at link (2) you can see that the signature file in /etc/ati/ is replaced - which will also kill the BETA signature.

OpenELEC has easy integration of e.g. vdr or tvheadend, if this would suffice your needs.

Still trying to figure out why I can't get the mini install to work. Meanwhile, last 2 nights have experienced a hard lockup after about 1 hour of watching video. Had to cold boot to clear, no evidence of errors in XBMC log file, although occurred about 3.5 minutes into watching a second video on both occasions. No other dropouts though.

Will keep trying on the mini.

About ready to give up on the mini. Will not detect my network interface at all so cannot proceed with install. Have spent about 2 entire days on this and nothing.

I've done a clean install of 12.10 desktop since I could not get the minimal install to work. I've installed Catalyst 13.6 beta, so far ok except XBMC locks up when shutdown with this version.

Will give it more of a go over tonight and report back any issues.

Played a couple of files with zero playback issues. If I try to quit / shutdown XBMC everything locks up. Minimizing the window sometimes results in a totally garballed screen with lockup.

still cannot get the minimal install to work.

Have been using catalyst 13.6 with the "full" install of Ubuntu 12.10 (32 bit) and as long as I have stayed in XBMC then playback has worked well. If I try to minimize XBMC or shut it down I will usually get locked up.

Tonight had a major issue when everything went dark while playing a video. Could not get it back. Had a picture during restart but when ubuntu started it all goes black again. Removed the beta driver but did not fix.

Currently doing a "re-install" of 12.10 Sad
