Solved Milkdrop 2 for XBMC
#61
just to chime in here. ProjectM is a big mess. I've been sinking hours on end into trying to get it build and work without system libraries, but have failed so far. Spiff(sry, I don't accept that other name) has been very helpful, yet still no dice.

@moreno68, MilkDrop currently only supports DirectX / Direct3D rendering today which means its made for Microsoft Windows operating systems.

ProjectM is an OpenGL clone of MilkDrop, and if you read the whole thread you understand that it's an upgraded version ProjectM you want.

ProjectM 2.x have been ported to OpenGL ES and Android as well as iOS in upstream which is needed http://projectm.sourceforge.net

XBMC can't use MilkDrop because it is closed source, so you have to be satisfied with ProjectM. If not then you have to upgrade or improve ProjectM's code and its presets.

XBMC today however only uses ProjectM 1.0 and its presets, but it that would be upgraded to ProjectM 2.1 and its presets you would be golden

Version 1.0.0 of Milkdrop 2 for XBMC now available from here https://github.com/oO-MrC-Oo/Milkdrop2-XBMC

Copy the visualization.milkdrop2 folder to your XBMC/addons folder.

Notes:
  • Windows only
  • No user configuration (time between presets etc)
  • No reading from rars like MD1
  • Minimal testing - don't blame me if it blows up your PC

@MrC
Great work. Have encountered no issues here, and performance is great (with the exception of one or two demanding presets, but that's to be expected). Much appreciated.

if upstream ever moves to the unified addon build system for visualizations, note that i have done a (blind, untested) restructuring https://github.com/notspiff/visualization.milkdrop2

Is there a chance to get this to work on the latest Helix Nightlies? (I know this is most likely out of the scope, but does not hurt to ask Smile )

Are you saying it doesn't work with latest Helix? It seems to be running fine here for me.

Hmm, that is odd. When i try to play music when the visualisation is selected, the music plays, but XBMC becomes unresponsive, and has to be force quit. Ill see if the logs say anything.

Same here unfortunately. XBMC crashes immediately when the vis kicks in.

Here's my log.

Edit: Perhaps I should add that the music keeps playing while the GUI just becomes unresponsive. This is what I mean by "crashing".

Second log, basically the same as above but shows that the music keeps playing
