I'm having the same issue running XBMC 3.1.2 (openelec) on a Raspberry PI
Movies & TV shows work perfect but Music hangs on scanning, and cannot be cancelled either.

(just a note,,, i did a "tail -f xbmc.log" just before hitting the Music folder in the music library, to keep the log as short as possible)

You found a workaround i see
go to: settings - music - file lists and uncheck "enable tag reading"
