Android External player still possible? And sugesstion

Heart
Hello,

I must admit I´m confused ;(

Is it still possible to use external players like avia player or Rockplayer2 for example? And if so, do I need to download the XAF thingy? Or is it inbuilt?

Thanks a lot!

Ps: I got Allwiner A31, smooth UI! WoW!! But video playback sucks ;( But I guess that won´t change (Closed source SoC) so external player is my only chance.

But on a side note, a suggestion: Would it be possible to allow "external decoder hooking" like some players do for XBMC? So programmers could publich "Allwiner A31" decoding on play store until we got a fix or something?

Yes, using an external player is and always has been a feature of XBMC. Don't know what you mean by "XAF thingy" but I suppose some preconfigured APK which uses the external player.

Empty page with just a title :/

Edit: huh? Now with content... brb reading

ok read everything, just a question: Because movies with up to 720p are running fine, is there a way to say: use external player when video is 1080p?

Hm ok tried it after work, and it just crashes my XBMC. Shall I collect logs or no interest to fix that?

I also cannot get external players to work in XBMC 12.2 onwards.

It works fine on the XBMC XAF Custom build available from xbmchub but following the instructions on the XBMC wiki (http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=HOW...%20Android) results in the external player not launching for me on XBMC 12.2 or the nightly builds.

This thread suggests a number of people have the same issue on XBMC 12.2 onwards:
http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=166717

And this thread suggests the fix is to add CopyUserDataIfNeeded("special://masterprofile/", "playercorefactory.xml"); to xbmc/Application.cpp:
http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=166717

I'd make the change myself but am unsure of any side affects to this - any dev able to comment?

I'm not a developer myself, but from what I understand, the fix used in the XAF and other builds won't work for mainline XBMC. It would mess up the other platforms, and it's basically a band-aid solution. The real issue is somewhere else. Outside of that, I don't know.

What's confusing me is that the XBMC wiki (http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=HOW...on_Android) suggests that you can do this, but there appears to be plenty of evidence to suggest either you cannot (or at least that people are struggling with this).

Personally I have created the file exactly as the wiki suggests and it does not work on with XBMC 12.2 or the latest nightly build.

I know this works with custom builds of XBMC but can someone confirm one way or another, does this work with XBMC 12.2 release or one of the nightly builds?

I am a xbmc developer and from what I understand there are several non-xbmc.org sources have various fixes and hacks applied to fix the issues. These fixes are spread far and wide across the net/forums/threads. Now until someone from these non-xbmc.org sources takes the time to prepare a proper PR and submits it, it will not get into xbmc.org mainline as there is no dev here interested in running external players via xbmc. The internal players are our focus and we care little about some external XYZPlayer.

I think that's fair enough if that's XBMC's stance, can't argue with that.

However, I would say that a wiki entry on XMBC's official site suggesting that it is possible to configure external players on Android is very misleading.

if you're active on those websites you can ask them to file a pull request with their fixes - but don't expect much to happen on their side, because if they would care about upstream XBMC they would have done this long before.
