I am looking for a quick and easy way to share my music library at my office to a few employees with iphones to play music on. Will a RaspberryPI with an external hard drive and xbmc be a good fit for them to be able to stream over the network?

XBMC is able to serve audio and video files via UPnP. There has to be at least 1 application for iPhones that can connect to a UPnP server and play media from there. I can't really advise any app in particular but I'd be surprised if there wasn't any.

Seems a complicated way to do it - won't iTunes work?

Use the official iOS remote from the App Store. It will let people queue up music in a big group playlist, add to the existing playlist, make it the "next song" to be played, etc. Also, you can use AirPlay for direct music playback from iPhones.
