Linux Radeon OSS with vdpau (howto)
(2013-10-28, 14:54)Dradge Wrote: I tried today this howto. VC1 sample from @laric (vc1_1080p_ap_l3_18mbps_ac3_hddvd.mkv) don't play. I just get sound but no picture. I will post logs tomorrow.

I think the hardware (HD4290 (UVD2) with AMD Sempron 140) is not enough powerfull for this file. I will try with a AMD Athlon II X4 610e.

I tried the latest kernel, and the VC-1 sample as well.
It's perfect on my iMac i5 2.5GHz
@Snippo. Logs look OK compared to mine. Maybe in the bios check- ram for igp set to 512. Force igp primary. Disable on board sound (spdif/analog) Enable HDMI audio codec. Make sure ram is stable- memtest86+? Yet, doubt 2 systems have ram issues. Apu at stock settings. I have an ecs mb. I have configured it that way over time for less linux issues. I usually install full xubuntu64 desktop, then disable composition from setting mgr. Then follow the OP how to. Just skipping only the upstart script parts. I do not add the desktop mgr later. I run Firefox YouTube's music videos 1080p to test first. Then run xbmc from the desktop enviornment. I do not passthrough. I do use pulse stereo over hdmi to TV. Maybe that could be a difference. I did do the op and plays fine 4 me w/o desktop and pure alsa. I doubt ecs is the only mb oss supports on the a4. 8). Maybe something I did gives you a clue to your issue. Good luck.
@Snippo:
Could you please play a sample, perhaps this one: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/5572...lannad.mkv and capture the debug xbmc.log while playing it?
First decide what functions / features you expect from a system. Then decide for the hardware. Don't waste your money on crap.
The white screen I mentioned is what I get when xbmc starts (or rather, when it doesn't start) so I won't be able to play a sample.
When I install Lubuntu I'm also unable to get into the desktop with the latest kernel and driver. I think the X server crashes or something. Sometimes the xbmc background will show up after booting, but then it just freezes.
Remove the radeon.dpm=1 from the grub file, do sudo update-grub afterwards and post:

DISPLAY=:0 /usr/lib/xbmc/xbmc-xrandr | pastebinit

after the reboot

Logs:
dmesg
xbmc.log (sound over S/PDIF)
xbmc.old.log (sound over HDMI)
Xorg.0.log
vdpauinfo
dpkg -l | grep mesa
Hi,
I do have a similar poblem here using the last kernel but every 1:37 on the video I've just played:
dmesg
xbmc.log
Xorg.0.log
vdpauinfo
dpkg -l | grep mesa

Thanks for this guide and for your help fritsch

The way I did:
a) Install Lubuntu 13.10 (actually I did update from 13.04, without formatting /home)
b) Install xbmc from Lubuntu Software Center
c) Try xbmc with the default Lubuntu configuration
d) Follow the instructions in page 1 of this thread, only the ones needed to use xbmc from my account
e) Update kernel, libraries etc.
@biau: Not a debug log, nothing in.

works good here, zotac e2 1800 hd 7340.
i wrote your install into a script, worked just fine.
i notice alot more depth and color compared to fglrx.

Sorry:

dmesg http://paste.ubuntu.com/6320826/
xbmc.log http://paste.ubuntu.com/6320827/
xorg http://paste.ubuntu.com/6320829/

I've started the vid at
22:56:01
and stopped it just after the secound sound cut at 22:59:24 (the sound cut was one or two seconds before that)
Quote:22:56:07 T:140730374813440 DEBUG: CDVDPlayerAudio:: Skipping 1 packet(s) of 32.00 ms duration

Can you turn off Adjust Refreshrate to match video and also turn off Sync Playback to Display (as those make only sense together) and retry with 60hz? Better?

yes here
http://paste.ubuntu.com/6320948/

started at 23:18:39
stopped at 23:32:20

The sound was ok during all playback

This is without radeon.dpm=1:
http://paste.ubuntu.com/6321123/

Uncommenthing these lines in startxbmc.sh still gives connected=false for HDMI-0:
# xrandr --output HDMI-0 --set audio auto
# xrandr -r 50
@Snippo I did have some issues getting the upstart script going on my OP install. Just checked that install. I get bumped to command prompt and use
sudo xinit /user/bin/xbmc
to start... I figured I set up the user account wrong. As it requires a log on. On desktop I skip xbmcstart.sh
I have installed ubuntu min 64 13.04 and ran through the instructions on this thread. I am getting audio drop outs every ~90 seconds on 23.976 video when I set XBMC output to either 23.976 or 24.00 Refresh Rate. I have seen this in the past and found a fix in the past with this same PC on a different installation by changing the Settings -> Video Output -> Refresh Rate to 23.976 and/or Settings -> Video Playback -> Adjust display refresh rate to match video ON. Is what is happening just that the conversion from 23.976 film rate to 24p in my display? I verified with my projector it is actually receiving a 24.00Hz signal when I have XBMC set to 23.976. When I was running xbmcbuntu (standard install) I was able to set the refresh rate to 23.976. However, with this new installation following this guide, even when I set the refresh rate to 23.976, my projector is still receiving a 24.00Hz signal. Something is not being done right in the kernel or drivers perhaps to allow the signal to be a true 23.976Hz. I have searched this massive thread and others and have seen others having issues with dropped audio every xx seconds. I don't know if that is the same issue as what I am seeing, but I immediately recognized it when I was testing this new guide and believe this is the issue in my case.

Can anyone tell me where to look or what to change so that my PC will output a true 23.976Hz when I select either of these two settings I listed above?

dmesg: http://paste.ubuntu.com/6321982/
xbmc.log http://paste.ubuntu.com/6321983/

vdpauinfo http://paste.ubuntu.com/6321987/
dpkg http://paste.ubuntu.com/6321989

My previous experience is pointing me to something in my xorg.. I see these modes in Xorg.0.log for 1080P:
Code:
24.004] (II) RADEON(0): Modeline "1920x1080"x60.0  148.50  1920 2008 2052 2200  1080 1084 1089 1125 +hsync +vsync (67.5 kHz eP)
24.004] (II) RADEON(0): Modeline "1920x1080"x50.0  148.50  1920 2448 2492 2640  1080 1084 1089 1125 +hsync +vsync (56.2 kHz e)
24.004] (II) RADEON(0): Modeline "1920x1080"x59.9  148.35  1920 2008 2052 2200  1080 1084 1089 1125 +hsync +vsync (67.4 kHz e)
24.004] (II) RADEON(0): Modeline "1920x1080"x24.0   74.25  1920 2558 2602 2750  1080 1084 1089 1125 +hsync +vsync (27.0 kHz e)
24.004] (II) RADEON(0): Modeline "1920x1080"x24.0   74.18  1920 2558 2602 2750  1080 1084 1089 1125 +hsync +vsync (27.0 kHz e)

There is no line for x23.976.. I'm not familiar with this setup though because I do not have an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to edit.

xrandr output : http://paste.ubuntu.com/6322061 (shows 24P active)

Again, when I have the Refresh Rate set to 60.0 Hz, and am not syncing display to refresh rate of the video, I get flawless audio (even on DTS, DD, or TrueHD). However, the video quality suffers when I use 60Hz since it is converting the video from 23.976 to 60.
