Linux Radeon OSS with vdpau (howto)
All keyboard input is handled by XLib. If a window has focus, it receives the input. The only reason I can think of why you don't get input is that the window has no focus. Maybe you give the window focus by killing boblight. How exactly do you kill boblight? Can you attach a mouse and focus XBMC by clicking somewhere in the window? Would this change anything?
i had this problem when using the master ppa, xbmc kept losing focus randomly when playing/stopping videos.

bash window and blackbox tray pops into view.

You "had" or "it is solved" now?

Edit: OpenELEC ships a patch for fullscreen issues since longer: https://github.com/OpenELEC/OpenELEC.tv/...REEN.patch - but this was solely fluxbox specific.
First decide what functions / features you expect from a system. Then decide for the hardware. Don't waste your money on crap.
"had" in the sense i stopped using it when it broke the PVR plugin, will give it another go later today.

It did not break the pvr plugin, it bumped the API ... so you need to build a matching plugin

This kind of patch should not be used outside of OE!
Okay - can you explain what this patch does? Cause even seo forgot about it :-)

I just tried Blackbox with my master and see no issues.
it doesn't happen all the time and seems to happen when the tv changes frequency like 24hz.
i started and stopped the video about 5 times before it triggered.
