Intel NUC - Haswell (4th Generation CPU)
Would this be a good NAS to go with? QNAP TS-420 Diskless System Network Storage
Reply
Personally I didnt like QNAP as much as Synology (top pick) or Netgear ReadyNAS (what im currently using). But if you check reviews on the intended product you will get an indication as to whether it will be OK for you. Budget is obviously a big factor and im always looking for Value, so although I think Synology are the best, when the opportunity came up to get a near new ReadyNAS Ultra 4 disk for half the RRP I had to go with that!

He has an existing machine, leave the drives in it, share them to the network, watch the content from the existing machine, shove it into a closet if you don't want to see or hear it. I wouldn't buy a pre-built NAS ever, FreeNAS or unRAID on cheap hardware is way way better IMO. I've been using unRAID for at least 7 years or so and haven't ever lost data (shrug). 30TB of storage currently...

Yeah in my case I work in IT every day and sometimes (and particularly in this case) I just wanted to buy an appliance that I dont/cant "mess with" too much, as I already have very little time at home to spend with the family or doing all the other things I want to do (like gaming, building PCs, coding/development, watching TV/movies etc). Building and configuring my own NAS server would be yet another distraction. Perhaps another time in my life I would enjoy the challenge and experience but at this time, i just want a hands off appliance Smile All approaches are valid though and yes as you say, the cheapest option would be for dezmick to just share the drives from his big PC and not have to buy anything

I really like the FreeNAS project, but having fiddled with it for quite some time I really enjoyed my Synology NAS for a few reasons:
- Nice UI
- Able to reach 1 Gbit/s speeds out of the box
- The box itself consumes approx 5 watts (plus the drives of course, but that would be the same regardless of the platform)

FreeNAS is cheaper and gives you more flexibility, but it takes some effort to find and tune a platform that will saturate a GigE link with a power consumption that low (5W). Supermicro has a promising J1900 motherboard for NAS use though: X10SBA.

IMHO, Synology and QNAP both are about as good as it gets when it comes to NAS boxes.

As this is getting off topic, let's not continue here. Blush

Not sure why you need to saturate a GigE link for one client as this guy seems to have.

But it is a matter of personal preference, convenience and cost (of nas) vs flexibility and cost (of power).

There are environmental concerns both ways. Buying a NAS and ditching the tower creates another discarded box that should perhaps be recycled/resued. OTOH the NAS uses less electricity so that goes the other way.

Personally I like being in control of my computer systems, so I would simply install ubuntu server on the tower and manage my own self built nas without synology or whoever governing what I can and can't run, but at the end of the day it's a personal decision and also completely off the topic of this thread.

Upgraded to latest BIOS from last beta BIOS.
Can anybody confirm, if WOL works? Now my NUC seems not to boot anymore from WOL Sad

Hi, i just got an i3 nuc set up and ran the ir fix script but my universal remote only works for mute, i've tried to reprogram it but that failed. So i'm looking to buy a separate rc, i searched the thread and it seems http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid...pid1714980 an mce rc would be the better choice over xbox rc. Can anyone confirm if this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Windows-Control-...mce+remote is likely to work out of the box and would be better than say this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Microsoft-Media-...box+remote ?
Thanks

BIOS Version 0026 - WYLPT10H.86A.0026.2014.0514.1714
Fixed issue where system restarts instead of shutting down with Linux.

interested to see how they did.

I got off the NAS bandwagon with unraid. Got tired of buying a new NAS box every time I needed more capacity. Just build an unraid and add to it, add to it and add to it!

It's the same as the beta bios, it works perfectly and I now have WOL working again as usual. Do note that if you want it to suspend rather than shutdown, you'll have to change the option in power options and then restart.

Unless you want hot swap bays, in which case you're better off buying an OTS unit because the price to get hot swap bays into a decent case without fuss is high. Also, unRaid has had very little core development in the last few years, you'd be much better going with FreeNAS, and the price is about right.

WOL now works after disconnecting for short time from power source.

Hmm. Dunno, but I’ve just ordered the GYMLE one myself (the Xbox version does look nicer though, doesn’t it). I hadn’t spotted that one before I ordered the former (and it’s cheaper).
Should have it tomorrow... so I can report back then, if you want.

UnRAID development hasn't ever stopped, I have no idea how you could, say that. It's Currently got a beta that allows it to run Xen VMs. I've been running it since it was first released with no issues and the support forum is always active. I've used hot swap bays and cases without problem and have 30TB now with empty bays available. Having seen friends burn up quite a few of those pre-built things I won't touch them unless its from the likes of dell or HP. Being able to buy cheap parts and easily upgrade is nice, I've swapped cases 3 times, mobo 4, and now run it under ESXi in a 3u chassis all without losing any data. That I can use whatever size drives I want is nice but it certainly won't saturate a Gig network nor is that needed for movies. For that I'd do FreeNAS - which I also virtualize for an ESXi datastore :-)

I'm multiple revs back on the NUC bios, I don't do sleep or WoL, is there any advantage to my moving to the new bios? I know they fixed the issue with the EFI and Linux, any other big bugs stomped? I've had zero issues with my MCE remotes etc. and am just curious if I'm missing out on anything by not updating. Glad to see Intel is actively working on the bios!

Thanks, appreciate that, i think you ordered the right one though as it looks like http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid...pid1714980 the xbox one doesn't power on the nuc. I got yatse working but it's draining the phone battery big time so rc would make it perfect Smile Latest bios (26) installed and yatse can startup and shutdown so wol is working fine i guess.
