How do you organize your movies?

Okay, then I wont try that either (the easier the better). I will just set up everything in xbmc after importing the shows and movies.

TV

Drive
- Show Title
-- Season
--- Episodes

Example:
Y:\American Horror Story\Season 02\S02E01.mkv
E:\The Shield\Season 01\S01E01.avi

Film

Drive
- Film Title
-- Film file

Example:
X:\Avatar\Avatar.mkv
Z:\Doc Hollywood\Doc Hollywood.avi

I don't separate media by container or resolution, that's what XBMC is for.

I think you are all over-complicating things, I have all my movies in one folder. XBMC does a fantastic job of sorting through them all and categorizing them automatically.
Living Room: ASUS Chromebox / OpeneElec 5 / Kodi 14.2
Bedroom: Amazon FireTV Stick / Kodi 14.2
Home Office: Amazon FireTV Stick / Kodi 14.2
Windows Server: Intel Core i3-2100T / 8GB Ram / 48TB / MySQL / StableBit DrivePool on Server 2012 R2 Standard

I've been using that format for years, over 10,000 episodes and not an issue Tongue

I have used the following to great success over the years, not only for XBMC, but for other scrapers such as Thumbgen & YAMJ (Not all mv my devices support XBMC)

Movies->Genre->Moviename (I sometimes create subdirectories below this with sets ie: Star Trek

Television->Showname->Showname SXX->Showname SXXEXX.xxx and put all Specials in S00 and numbered as TheTVdB

X:\The Walking Dead\Season 03\S03E16.1080p.mkv

I only use the .1080p if the file is 1080p, if the container is mkv then I know it's 720p and if it's avi then I know the content will be standard definition. From what I've seen everyone has their own way of categorizing media, but I've stuck with this method for many years and find it's worked out the best. That's also covering WMC, MediaPortal, WMC/Mediabrowser and finally XBMC.

I also have poster.jpg and an extrafanart directory as well, although I think the extrafanart is left over from a previous script or Artwork Downloader, can anyone confirm this?

Now that you've mentioned that - and I've already replied - I do have a question. I'm aware of applications that will take the current names and rename the files, so for example S01E01 would become The Shield 1x01 Episode Name - but are there any that you know of that play nicely with XBMC and keeping the watched status? I just did a test using Filebot and Absolutely Fabulous and it renamed all the eps using TVDB info, but lost the watched status.

If anyone knows I would greatly appreciate it.

If you also chaanged the filename in the database then the watched ststus would stay, but that would involve a bit of work and the perceived wisdom in most of these situations is to know the database layout thoroughly before writing direct to it.

Anyway there is nothing wrong with your naming. If you want to switch to another method, I would simply do it for new series, and leave well enough alone with the old.

And what he said!

My own naming is

TV/The Walking Dead/Season 1/The Walking Dead S01E01 Days Gone Bye.mkv

Then if some slip of the mouse moves the file somewhere, I know where to put it back!

That's exactly what I'm thinking, I accidentally moved all episodes named S02E01.avi to one directory - took quite a while to put them back in place. I'm thinking that it should be possible to rename all using the app I previously mentioned and then update the watched status using the trakt addon. I don't believe that goes by file name but by show/episode etc.

A smidge off-topic, but I've a batch renaming tip (Linux users only - sorry): Let's say you have S02E01.mkv to S02E20.mkv, you can use the rename command as shown below:-

Code:
$ rename 's/S02/My.Favourite.Show.S02/g'

It's just regex, but I've found it really handy!
