So to conclude, if you have the necessary bandwidth and set up a VPN for Samba it should work fine. It is possible to use Samba directly over the internet but it's an extremely bad idea and many ISPs block the necessary ports because you simply shouldn't do it.

I know the Mediabrowser group would be able to handle this request if the data is handed over to their API. Since they are WMC centric I think this would be great if you guys can get together for the live TV portion. That way the rest of us can have a simplified medthod for remote viewing ALL of our media from one interface with the stability of WMC as a backend.
