Passthrough (optical) for Music and decoded (HDMI) for Videos. Is this possible?
#1
Hi, all.

I'm trying to make sense of the Audio settings in XBMC, and am hoping for some guidance on the following:

I am using an ATV1 with XBMC/OpenELEC and what I want to do is

1. Use passthrough via Optical Out to an external DAC->premap->amp->speakers for listening to MUSIC,

**AND**

2. Use HDMI to send audio and video directly to the TV for watching TV.

**AND**

3. Not have to switch Audio Output settings each time.

Can someone advise me on what settings to use for this? I've been reading the WIKIs and postings and trying to make sense of the options but I'm really coming up short.

The following settings give me digital output to the DAC (good for music), but nothing to the TV
Audio Output Device: HDA Intel, ALC998A Digital S/PDIF
Passthrough Device: HDA Intel, ALC998A Digital S/PDIF

The following settings give me output to the TV (good for that), but nothing to the DAC
Audio Output Device: HDA Intel, HDMI
Passthrough Device: HDA Intel, ALC998A Digital S/PDIF

I'm hoping I don't have to change Audio Output settings each time I switch between TV and Music. Any ideas?

General Platform and Hardware Setup:
- OpenELEC Stable - Apple TV i386 Version:3.2.4
- ATV1 with Broadcom BCM70015 upgrade
- ATV HDMI out to Sony Bravia XBR television
- ATV Optical out to DAC-AH Lite DAC
-DAC analog out (RCA) to Dared SL-2000A preamp then on to TAD-60 2-channel amp

Current XBMC Audio Settings (results: no audio to HDMI, and digital out to DAC)
- Audio Output: optical/coax
- Speaker Configuration: 2.0
- Dolby Digital (AC3) capable receiver [true]
- DTS Capable Receiver [true] (tried all permutations of DD and DTS)
- Audio Output Device: HDA Intel, ALC998A Digital S/PDIF
- Passthrough Device: HDA Intel, ALC998A Digital S/PDIF

Most of my audio files are 24/96 flac.

Any ideas/references would be very much appreciated.

(A natural question would be why not just play it all through the hi-fi. A couple of reasons-- I don't feel like cranking up the whole system and heating up the tubes just to watch a quick show. Also, based on the layout of my room the television is not placed between the speakers, so the stereo effect when watching TV isn't there anyway.)

If it turns out I much switch each time, can anyone think of a way to automate this?

Thanks for taking a look at this.

-Matt.
