OpenELEC Testbuilds for RaspberryPi Part 2
(2014-03-22, 16:09)doveman2 Wrote: so it doesn't support 1080P in DMT mode and I believe that if I use anything other than 1080P, XBMC can't autoswitch the resolution/refresh rate to match the source material can it?

No, autoswitching will work at any resolution that supports multiple refresh rates (but typically 1080p is the only resolution that supports 24 Hz).
It doesn't look like any DMT modes on your display support multiple refresh rates.

OK. Anyway, it means I have to use CEA mode and currently I haven't found a way to make XBMC output video in full range, even though hdmi_pixel_encoding=2 makes the GUI run in full range.

Even if I accept that the RPi/XBMC can't do full range and just calibrate my TV to it outputting limited range (and removing hdmi_pixel_encoding=2 to make the GUI run in limited range too), there's still the issue of why the thumbnails appear as they would in full range mode, regardless of which range I'm running at?
Just posting a quick video for anybody that is interested in looking at trying out the latest milhouse builds and what can be expected performance wise.

+1 for buttery smooth performance, even with nice themes!

Thanks to rbej, Milhouse, Popcornmix and everyone else involved. You have accomplished an amazing amount over the last two years. I never would have thought the Pi I got shortly after release would be capable of what it is today, and it wouldn't be without your hard work. We appreciate it!

If you're looking for a nice theme check out Refocus Light, a mod of Refocus Big specifically optimized for the Raspberry Pi: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=184160

Agreed. these current builds are just phenominal and you all do deserve a round of applause.

I use Aeon MQ5 on my PC which i have set just how i like it but alas its not going to stand a chance on the Pi.
The few other skins I have tried including Amber were just too slow for my liking.
I hadnt even heard of Refocus Light but I'm glad you pointed me to it.
This is a beautiful minimalistic theme that works very well on the pie. (Even better than Amber for me)
though you can see its still a WIP
mainly the poor transitions into libraries (press "Movies". Menu fades away. Background remains. Background turns black. Movie menu appears. Movie Background Loads) quite distinctly see the process but I might have a look at that because it will probably be some relatively easy xml edits to make a better transition
But i hope the DEV keeps working on this theme because it is very good on the Pi

Actually Aeon Nox 5 (http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=183504) does work pretty well with latest builds.
BigNoid has made the skin considerably lighter than Aeon Nox 4.
And it's a nice looking skin. Certainly worth a try. Just be a bit careful with the scripts it needs which tend to be periodically updating things in the background.
It's good to see improvements with TrueHD audio. I tested out the latest build but I'm still seeing stuttering on High overclocking.

My AVR supports TrueHD decoding, I have tried various audio setting combinations - is there one combination that should work the best? My source material looks like:

And a big thank you to everyone working on the rpi port - it's a huge improvement over the previous version.

+1 for Aeon Nox 5 Smile BigNoid wanted his new skin to be low on resources, and now for a beta its usable (on Rpi) and very stable.

I am amazed by this skin, my favorite for now after a few months with Amber.

What overclock are you using? You will need overclock for TrueHD. With arm at 1GHz I can play all my TrueHD sample files.
You will also need to ensure your network is well set up. Can you try the same file from sdcard or usb stick?

I was trying Medium at first:

Code:
# mode 'Medium'                 :    900   |    333    |    450     |      2
# mode 'High'                   :    950   |    450    |    450     |      6
# mode 'Turbo'                  :   1000   |    500    |    500     |      6

At your suggestion I tried Turbo, but that was unstable. I dialed back to High settings with arm_freq set to 1000 and the pi seems stable.

arm_freq=1000
core_freq=450
sdram_freq=450
over_voltage=6

My network speed seems OK (my NFS server is a home built linux HTPC)

Code:
1029446095 bytes (981.8MB) copied, 87.629489 seconds, 11.2MB/s

The good news is that at this overclock setting all my 'normal' TrueHD files are working well. I have passthrough turned off - do TrueHD files honor that setting? Can I turn it back on for AC3 and DTS?

I do still have one problem movie. I realize this is going to be a challenging one for the pi. This is the Akira Blu-ray with a high sampling rate:

All three of the audio tracks - even the stereo - have some problems. I tried changing the resample setting to low(fast) and subtitles off but it did not help. The next thing I'll try is local playback to see if that makes a difference. Also I might see if I can get a better power supply to go up to full Turbo overclock settings.

In any case, 99% of my library will play well now ... thanks for your help!

The Pi doesn't support TrueHD passthrough. It has to decode to (possibly multichannel) PCM.
So, leave AC3 and DTS passthrough enabled, they have no effect when playing TrueHD.

I'm afraid 96kHz/192kHz TrueHD is probably a step too far. We'll keep optimising what we can, but there will always be things that are just too much.

One of your TrueHD tracks is 12.5 Mbps. That's a pretty decent bitrate for a whole movie including video.
Note: just having that track present in the file still means it gets read (and subsequently discarded) and so adds to network bandwidth required.
TrueHD Test:

MySettings:

arm_freq=1000
core_freq=500
sdram_freq=500
over_voltage=6

My AV-Receiver Display: PCM Multichannel 5.1
Passtrough is on but the PI decode the TrueHD.

Why not decode the AV-Receiver?

This was the same with old PS3(PCM Multichannel 5.1) and new PS3(HD-Sound passthrough)

@Popcornmix:
The PI cann never passthrough True-HD or DTS-HD to AV-Receiver? It's Hardware problem?

Can we hope DTS-HD can the Pi decode(PCM Multichannel 5.1) in future?
(2014-03-23, 17:21)Koloss Wrote: Why not decode the AV-Receiver?

TrueHD passthrough requires running the audio channel at 8 channel @ 192kHz which isn't supported by the hardware, so it is not possible.
Ok!

But I think the Pi decode TrueHD is a very good job! I think we cannot hear a differennt(PCM Multichannel 5.1 vs. HD-Sound passthrough)
is cron working for other people on these builds?
