I have xbmc on my laptop and phone and been messing with it for the last few months.
I love what the software can do and was thinking about spending some money on a dedicated media device.
Question is what is the best device out at the moment?

The hardware sub-forum is a good place to get a general idea. A lot depends on various requirements, but in my opinion it is hard to go wrong with the Intel NUC DN2820FYKH (with the Intel Celeron N2820). It's small and looks great as a set-top box, it's possible to replace the case with a fanless one (though most users indicate that they can't hear the existing fan), it will do just about any video format you can throw at it, all the various audiophile stuff for connecting with a good audio receiver (if you care about such things), built in IR, USB 3 ports, and more.
