Amazon Fire TV for XBMC
(2014-05-03, 15:21)Bluewave Wrote: I'm looking at this:

and it has adb commands for copying files back and forth between the PC and Fire. (I don't really know why I'd want to do that.)
But it doesn't say anything about how they are supposed to talk to one another in the first place. My PC is in the next room, not hooked up to my entertainment center. Can the Fire with XBMC access it and its files, for streaming? How?

@LazerBlue: Perhaps I am not explaining this correctly.

I'd say that my question IS Fire-specific, because that would be the device that is running XBMC. If I have a Fire that is running XBMC -- rather than running XBMC on my PC -- then can the Fire that is running XBMC access the files on my PC (such as my music library)? That is the question, and I would say that is absolutely Fire-specific.

When we say "Fire TV-specific", we mean that the only questions we want to talk about in this thread are questions that would only come up when using XBMC with the Fire TV. Your question is a generic XBMC question that would apply to any XBMC installation. This link should provide you with the information you need. Basically, if you set up filesharing on your Windows (or Linux, or OS X) PC, XBMC will be able to access those shares over your home network and play your content back. This is true no matter what device XBMC is installed on; that's why it's not considered a Fire TV-specific question.

In comparison, one question that is a Fire TV-specific question is, "Does XBMC on the Fire TV have the ability to play back high-bitrate VC-1 files?" That's because the question only applies to the Fire TV.

You need to use the adb connect command to connect to the AFTV, before you can issue other commands.
"questions that would only come up when using XBMC with the Fire TV."

OK...For some silly reason, I thought that that was EXACTLY what I would be doing.

In any case, you at least gave me some information that was missing (or, at least, inscrutably buried) in the manual pages that I was reading. So, no matter what device -- iOS, Android (including Fire TV), whatever -- as long as there is a WiFi or wired connection between the device running XBMC -- in this case, the Fire TV -- and the device that has the media -- in this case, a PC in the next room -- and the device that stores the media has them set up as shares, then you should be good to go.

My block was in understanding exactly how the Fire TV would access the PC, and be able to see and stream its files. I wasn't even sure that it could do that in the first place. Sounds like it would just be a WiFi connection between the two, and that the XBMC software on the FireTV would be configured to access specific shares set up on the PC.

If that's correct, then that was basically all I was asking. Then I can dig into more of the details once I get all of the equipment.
Welcome to XBMC. As the FireTV becomes more popular I expect we'll see a lot more folks new to it in general.

Once you get XBMC installed on it by following the wiki documentation (which is quite detailed for this purpose) there's very little specific to the AFTV involved in setting it up. One of the great things about XBMC is that it's the same application across platforms - there are certain hardware/OS limitations that need to be overcome in some cases (or can't be overcome) but when it comes to the nuts and bolts of setting it up it's pretty much the same.

You'd be better served in the general help forum, which is where people expect those kinds of questions.
@Bluewater, you are correct in your last statement. Also following the wiki the adb is easy to do and its only in your case for installing xbmc. All the extra stuff about transferring files back and forth are for those that want to transfer their current configurations and customize the advance settings. Also someone created a self installer (haven't used it personally so don't know how well it works or doesn't work) but that may be an option for you as well. I think it was a few page badge in this tread.
Cool. Thanks, guys.

From the wiki page:

Download and unzip the ADB Utility from http://d-h.st/TYa

But when I open that link, Malwarebytes comes up with several malicious website messages.

I just clicked the link. It takes me to devhost, one of the more popular rom hosts for xda, w/o any warnings. Not sure what's happening on your end.

I was forwarded to a different address after I downloaded the utility that seemed to suggest I should install something which seemed a little suspicious.
I think it has to do with the links on that page.

The instructions in the Wiki are way more complicated than they need to be. Just follow these and you'll be up and running in minutes:
