Bug Gotham stuck loading movie

I love how a little bit of criticism gets everyone all defensive. But hey, whatever it takes to get people paying attention huh?
Please refer to my post in the other thread. If somebody had bothered to say "ok, we recognise this is a problem, but we can't figure it out yet" or "please do x, y and z to help us sort this out" then we wouldn't have had as much of an issue.

Instead I get

Quote:Thx for cutting the logfile. Debug Log
and
Quote:Upgrade to 13.1b1 please.

then crickets. You should be ashamed.

In other news, since I'm actually trying to be helpful, heres my latest:

my previous logs I was trying to play lone ranger. This time I try 10 things I hate about you. Which also frequently crashes.

tried to play 10 things from the library - froze - http://paste.ubuntu.com/7602537/
tried to play from video - files. Played!!! this happens maybe 5% of the time. At best. - http://paste.ubuntu.com/7602539/
tried again to play from video - files - froze - http://paste.ubuntu.com/7602543/

changed files.

tried to play an episode of letterman encoded the same way - played fine - http://paste.ubuntu.com/7602588/
tried to play the same episode tagged as tv show using identify (how 10 things was tagged) - played fine - http://paste.ubuntu.com/7602589/
tried to play the same file retagged as 10 things (movie) using identify - played fine - http://paste.ubuntu.com/7602587/

I've always been able to play tv shows for some reason. lets try something else.

tried to play 9, encoded/tagged the same way as 10 things - played fine, tried again, played fine, tried 10 things, played fine, tried 10 things again. crash. Something was clearly working here before it stopped working. I have no idea what. - http://paste.ubuntu.com/7602608/
tried to play 9 again, crashed straight away - http://paste.ubuntu.com/7602615/

As best I can tell, the crash occurs for a movie that originally had a 5.1 AC3 track which has been converted using the handbrake appletv2 preset, which makes 2 audio tracks, 1 being stereo the other being AC3 passthru. The crash is inconsistent, but happens MUCH more often than not.
Only crashes when playing movies, I haven't experienced a TV show crash.
Does seem to crash for my recently added mkv files.

I will note that these are "soft" crashes. The log text continues to update as though the movie is playing, xbmc will exit out of fullscreen if I hit "\" and when i press keys it makes sounds like its recognising inputs. But the screen is frozen on the loading/working dialogue depending on the skin, no video or audio plays and it requires a sig9 to kill. normal kill command doesn't work. clicking the "x" in the gui doesn't work.

I would like to upload a sample, but I'm not going to put up 3GB of a copyrighted movie. Open to suggestions.

If there is anything else you'd like me to test. I'm all ears.

(please excuse me if one or more of the logs don't match the description. I uploaded a lot of logs very quickly just now)

Given that your crashes are not always consistent, are you sure your hardware is not at fault?

Oh and by the way 13.1 is available now.

And how would one check that?

I've had inconsistent crashes with xbmc on different hardware in the past. And as I've said time and time again, everything ran perfectly with Frodo.
I would leave blaming the hardware till last. Right now I'm blaming the linux build of Gotham, which seems to have changed lots for reasons that aren't immediately obvious.

Try 13.1, there are fixes going in all the time.

Looking at your log you have an awful lot of addons that _may_ be causing problems. They certainly clutter up the log.

EG from the log playing 9 http://paste.ubuntu.com/7602615/ I see that at about the time the movie started (or didn't start) playing, versioncheck ran.

As a test you could try removing all addons temporarily (mv .xbmc/addons .xbmc/addons.bkup) or disabling all of them (more tedious).

As far as hardware is concerned, debugging is very difficult. Apart from memtest, which has a good go at diagnosing ram issues, it is often a matter of subbing out parts until you find which part was causing instability, but I think you are right to leave that for the moment. But do look at the output of dmesg for signs of a dying hard drive.

Gotham has changes, it is called software development. Otherwise we'd all still be using the XBOX with SD video and stereo sound.

I think I have isolated the issue to NFS access.

Steps I took:
- uninstalled 13.1 rc1 and reinstalled 13.1 from stable ppa
- moved addons to backup as you suggested.
- tried to play 9, it soft froze same as before. "Working" dialogue comes up, and the log ticker keeps updating.
After a couple minutes it hard froze and everything stopped. sig9 kill. - http://paste.ubuntu.com/7611442/

had a look at the log and noticed the NFS keep alive line at the end.

soooo. I deleted my library and loaded it directly from the harddrive instead of via NFS.
Everything appears to be working swimmingly.

My setup involves a shared mysql library with xbmc accessing files from an NFS server, which is my ubuntu HTPC. As a result, the xbmc on the HTPC accesses files from its own harddrive via NFS.

1 - There is a bug here somewhere. It affects accessing movies in mp4/m4v containers via nfs. It doesn't seem to affect TV Shows and doesn't seem to affect mkv files. It wasn't present in Frodo.

2 - I can work around this bug by not accessing my library from NFS, but that doesn't help me with setting up a shared library for several devices on the network. Is it possible to have a mysql based library where the central xbmc instance accesses files locally and the rest access via NFS?

There should be no difference between how XBMC accesses TV Shows and how is accesses Movies. However there could well be a file size issue?

I agree. As per my previous post. I re-labelled a tv show to have the same tags as one of the movies that doesn't work and it played fine.

The only thing I can think of is the "large file size" flag in handbrake. I don't know what that flag does. I assumed something to do with 64-bit support. Could it be that screwing with something in the way xbmc reads files over nfs?

I'm getting right at the edge of my tech knowledge here, so if there is something you'd like me to test, please say so.

I'm no Linux expert, but to check if it was a network sharing issue (even though the share is local) or really is connected to NFS, I'd create a temporary smb share then copy some files to it for testing to see if you get the same behavior.

I installed samba, deleted my library and re-added it via smb. That seems to have solved it. Which narrows the bug down to NFS.

Have created a new thread now that a) my problem is solved and b) there is still a bug which we seem to have narrowed down somewhat.
