i am using xbmcbuntu, and when in xbmc i get sound as i should. but if i exit and run ubuntu or play a game on an emulator using advanced launcher or do anything else outside of xbmc i get no sound.
i am using hdmi for sound. where lies my problem

if you are using xbmcbuntu 13 final, you should just have sound on the desktop.
check that you have ~/.asoundrc
Note that you cannot have sound in xbmc and any other application at the same time as alsa device access is exclusive.
