How low can you go with a Haswell CPU without a loss in performance?

Hi,

I am thinking of putting together a dedicated Openelec HTPC and was wondering which CPU to use.

I want the device to play everything and run smoothly but I did not want to stick something unnecessarily powerful in.

Could I get away with a G1820 or I am going to need something a bit more powerful than that?

Depends a lot on if you have special needs like 4k upscaling/deinterlace maybe....

But for the most common stuff a lot more low-powered CPUs like the G1820 will suffice....

Hi,

Just to check is that upscaling/deinterlacing 4k video or is that 4k video or upcaling/deinterlacing?

The reason being is that I watch a lot of 1080i HD video and I need to watch that smoothly.

Deinterlacing 1080i should be no problem.

Excellent - thanks for the advice.

Just looking at current prices for the Haswell Celerons and Pentiums and they all seem to be close in priced.

It seems that there is a massive jump to the i3 range which, in light of your advice, seems is just unnecessary for normal HPTC system.

As it does not cost much more, I think I might just go with a G3220.
