From what I understand this is just the first very large step to get Kodi into the Store as a true UWP app, further work will still be required before Kodi can become available for the xbox one.

Isn't it a prerequisite that uwp apps run on all device families?

Yes that's the theory so it should be possible to load Kodi in developer mode and run it, however as the dev doesn't currently have an xbox it's not known how well it will function, so there maybe more code adjustments required.
