Android Test builds for HEVC / H.265 support on AMLogic and StageFright/MediaCodec?
#1
Read on Kodi DevCon Blog that Team Kodi are considering Forum Testing Threads for Test Build discussions to help developers do testing.

How about publishing Android test builds for pull requests #5493, #5533, and #5374 which together adds HEVC/H.265 support to both AMLogic and LibStageFright/MediaCodec in Kodi?

AMLogic S805 SoC is a middle-end model that only support hardware decoding of HEVC at 1080p Full HD but players have a lower price.

AMLogic S812 SoC is the new high-end model that can support hardware decoding of HEVC all the way up to 2160p / Ultra HD (4K/UHD).

Links to samples are available in this general discussion thread about the HEVC codec

AMLogic S805 and S812 are specifically targeting Android media player boxes and OTT (over-the-top content) set-top boxes as well as products targeting HDMI dongles and Smart TVs.

This article provides more technical details about the new range of AMLogic processors but the H265 codecs is really only thing new

Definitely. We have some server stuff going on at the same time that needs to get fixed first so downloads can work again, but once that happens we can get test builds of those pulls posted in here.

Bump this request for Amlogic test builds with HEVC / H.265 support.

Actually, both Android and Linux test builds would be very nice Smile

I've been granted some kind of ability to trigger test builds, so I'll see if this is something I can do..

I've got 5493 and 5374 together, but github says 5533 won't merge clearly, and I have no idea how any of this works (oh god, where am I, what button is this). Are you interested in a test build of just 5493 and 5374?

If I'm understanding the PRs correctly (5493 and 5374), this should support Rockchip RK3288 and AMLogic S812 (and maybe others, not sure). I have no idea about AMLogic S805. I have none of these devices, so I haven't tested this myself.

WARNING: Backup your settings before using this build, or you might lose them! This is based on nightly builds where old settings are moved to a new location as a part of the XBMC-to-Kodi rename, so the chances of a settings related bug (or losing your settings all together) is slightly higher than normal.

fyi there's currently no way to easily combine and build several PRs in one go. So you should always combine them yourself in a branch on your github and compile that.

Yep, that's what I ended up doing. Good to know that was the right way :D

Nice. Also, I believe SPMC (wiki) has these PRs as well.

What's the cpu load like when playing a h.265 file?

Thats awesome, pretty sure my fireTV will be at 100% cpu usage and 15 fps or lower lol. The fireTV 2 should solve this!
