New HiMedia Q5
Hi, I'm planning to buy a Himedia Q5. I know Q5 Pro will be out soon, but I'm planning to just get the current model for these reasons:

1. Cheaper (approximately USD100)
2. 4k support up to 4k30p, which is also the max that my AVR and 4k TV can support. Both my AVR and TV are 2014 models hence a little bit outdated.
3. I'm afraid if I buy the current generation HDMI 2.0 TV boxes that outputs 4k60p, my TV may not support it. Or maybe there will be auto resolution switching issues. Please tell me if this is not the case.

My question to you all is this:

1. Does current 4k videos run well with the Q5 outputting 4k30p?
2. Does Q5 output HEVC 4k30p videos well? Typically those 4k videos downloaded from YouTube.
3. What happens when I run a AVC/HEVC 4k60p video? Will Q5 run it well? Heck, can my 4k30p TV even show anything?
5. Is 4k videos watchable at 4k30p or 4k24p? Judder? Artifacts?
6. My AVR is only capable of 5.1. Does Q5 have any trouble to passthrough Dolby and DTS 5.1 via HDMI?
7. I will also game occasionally (mostly MAME). Does Q5 run games well? Does it work if I connect a wireless gamepad to it? What about 2 wireless gamepads?
8. Would it be better if I get the newer Himedia H8? It's slighly more expensive at USD120, but doesn't have the PQ engine.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

i don't think Q5 pro is so cheap ;-)

1) i don't think threre is 4k at 30p, BD uhd are 23,976fps
2) 4K youtube video are VP9 not HEVC .

No I'm not planning to buy Q5 Pro. I'm planning to get the Q5 OLD MODEL. My questions are all referring to Q5 OLD MODEL. Not PRO.

Yes, am aware most movies are at 23.976fps. When I said 4k30p, I also mean 4k24p. I just don't want to type something as long as 4k30p/4k24p

HDMI should support proper EDID negotiation, so if your TV reports 2160p at 24/25/30 or 24/30 then the source should only send content at that frame rate and shouldn't try to output 2160/50p or 60p.

All 'movie' (and TV drama/scripted comedy) shot 4K is likely to be 2160/24p (or 25p if European TV) so that is unlikely to be an issue.

What WILL be a potential issue is playing 2160/50p or 59.94p content - which is likely to the the standards for UHD1 TV broadcasts via DVB etc. You'll get these downscaled to 1080p or frame-rate dropped to 25/30p I suspect. Nothing that can really be done about this - but it shouldn't stop any 4K/60p boxes working with your display assuming the source is properly HDMI-compatible.

I wouldn't buy the old Q5 at this point as HiMedia have ceased production for it. They may continue supporting it for a while, but how long, who knows. Also, 4K is lacking on this, much better on Pro.

I managed to do below testing on my HD audio issue:

1. I tried Q10Pro with another Pioneer AVR that has hdmi 2.0 - HD audio passthrough with no problem.

2. But my Denon AVR-3311 which has hdmi 1.4 - HD audio passthrough only has DD/DTS core sound.

Anyone facing problem the same problem with no HD audio with older AVR which have hdmi 1.4? Can anyone confirm this?

Is this due to Q10 Pro hdmi 2.0 backward compatibility issue with older hdmi 1.4? Or it is just my Denon AVR? Help is greatly appreciated.

my avr is onkyo R548 and hd audio passthrough only DD/DTS core

sorry for stupid question, how to activate "Kodi wrapper" on my HiMedia Q5 box
I have tried to follow this post http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=...pid2201369 , but I don't know where can I find "Wrapper App" ?

I have recently updated Kodi from v15.2 to v16 - is that a problem?

I am missing H265 acceleration in Kodi, other than that it is working fine
Thank you in advance

1. Run KODI, and then exit KODI by click the EXIT icon.
2. Go to 'My Apps' from home menu. Find 'Wrapper' app and run it.
3. In the top left corner you'll see 'playercorefactory not installed'. Select the check box below to 'install playercorefactory'.
3. Run KODI and you should now have 7.1 audio and 3D-ISO support.

Q5/Q10 NOT have H265 acceleration in Kodi,

New Q10 pro have OMX Hardware acceleration that work in kodi.

Yes, you need to re-apply wrapper once you install a fresh/new Kodi APK. Here's how to apply the wrapper. If you're on firmware v3.0.3, the wrapper app should be in the apps section. Just open/apply it after opening Kodi once, then quitting out of it.

Funny, @looun and I replied at once, but yes to what he said too Smile.

H.265 Hardware Decoding works with Media Center, but it doesn't work with Kodi
http://www.himediatech.com/q5iv.html here it is stated Q5 model has "H.265 Hardware Decoding"
I guess Kodi wrapped would resolve this issue, but as you can see I don't have wrapper installed for some reason
I have even checked all installed apps in Android Settings Apps - All Apps, but I didn't found anythinig with "wrapper" in the name

You can download here http://www.futeko.com/newforum/index.php?topic=60.0
Only futeko firmware have wrapper pre-installed , you can found here http://www.futeko.com/newforum/index.php?topic=494.0 , you sure must have a English version of Q5.
