Hi all,

I have an installation of kubuntu with XBMC 13.2 and a lot of programs. In this installation I have a problem: randomly after watching some videos XBMC simply exit to operative system for no reason (I have configured that next video plays automatically). Firstly I thought it could be a problem of kwin window manager, but now I know it's not the reason.

The problem can happend after 5 or after 15 minutes and having play 2 or 7 videoclips, there is no fixed time or played videos.

To sup up, I've made a completely new and fresh install of Ubuntu 14.04 x64 (instead of kubuntu) and install onto it XBMC 13.2 then add my films, and problem is here (we can say it's not a kwin problem or some kind of compatibility problem with other software since it's a completely fresh install of Ubuntu + XBMC 13.2). I've try Unity and also Metacity with same result.

I'm not 100% sure, but the problem has not happend when I've disable the option of changing screen fps to match the one of the video (but it's needed to avoid judder).

Usually XBMC simply exists but twices it has show a ubuntu error message:

So I installed using "sudo apt-get install" all the packets that appears as obsolete, but this didn't fix the problem.

I would first, check the xbmc crash log, usually in your home directory. This includes the log file (debug or not) but also shows each thread stack, and the last call from the thread that caused the crash.

Also try playing the videos in other players - like mplayer or vlc. They may not crash, but their logs will contain info about corrupted frames or something else wrong with the files.

Just a couple of quick things to try to narrow down the problem.

Hi all,

After a lot of time testing Ubuntu I've know the problem of the change (or I should say "no-change") to 24p using Unity, Metacity or Compiz. I also have a problem consisting in that keyboard stops working when playing a 24p video and requires exit XBMC to fix (it happends with every window manager I've try, even lightest ones or booting directly to XBMC without loading a window manager)

To this we have to add the problem I tell in this thread (XBMC exits ramdomly after x time/videos played).

It has make me return to Kubuntu, where in a new installation of OS (kubuntu 14.04) and XBMC 13.2 everythings works ok BUT the problem of exiting XBMC after some time/videos played (now it's clear that it's a XMBC problem and not related to kubuntu/KWIN, or at least it happends also with other ubuntu distribution).

I please ask for some help with this, I attach the crash log with kubuntu (the problem is the same that can be sawn in the crash log of ubuntu I included on first post:

To be sincere, If anyone suggested me to install Helix in this moment I would think he's completely crazy. why? well... if using final stable version makes me have problems, using a release candidate 3 seems to me as commiting suicide.

The question is that you're not anyone, you're fritsch, and I'm sure if you're telling me this there are good reasons.

Now I have some questions...

1.- You mean that helix rc3 is going to work better than final and supposedly stable 13.2? (and with better I mean more stable, less hangs, frozen and all kind of stability problems).
2.- What ubuntu distro and version you recommend me? After the problems I've experienced with Ubuntu I understand the best choice is kubuntu, but... what version? I mean, 14.04 or 14.10?
3.- What skin to use? Now I use Aeon Nox 4.1.9.9 for gotham and Amber, is there any Aeon Nox that works in Helix? (if there is a 5.0 for helix, it's ok)
4.- I suppose I have to reconfigure and install skin and everything if i move to helix.

I understand you reccomend me Openelec but I want to have a complete PC, not only the XBMC, what can i do?.

In this issue I really can't understand why the only reccomended option for doing this with stability warranties is Windows (I always read that to avoid problems the best is openelec). I mean, If Microsoft can make a operative system in with you can run XBMC, why it is impossible with Linux? (curiously it's easy finding comments claiming the superiority of linux in terms of stability and lack of problems, but in my experience the truth is just opposite).

If not openelec, what distro is the "less bad" option? Ubuntu clearly not for the reasons I problems I've report in this same thread, kubuntu? 14.04 or 14.10?

I'm going to have a look at the info for the intel driver, now I'm using default ones that come with linux, I suppose it can cause problems.

Ah, sorry, I thought option B was part of the A.

Inside the option B the reccomendation is Ubunty trusty mini x64, is this still the recomendation?.

In general is better trusty than utopic even for kodi 14?

Please reproduce with kodi. IIRC I have fixed something in that regard. 13.2 is obsolete now Helix is branched.

I have made a new install using kubuntu 14.10 and kodi 14 RC3 and I have exactly the same problem, so installing 14.0 instead of 13.2 solves nothing.

I'll try the guide you have link me, everyways I really thank any advice to solve this problem, It would be great if I could make it work in kubuntu.

Kubuntu, Ubuntu all those nightmare things use compositing (Edit: Desktop, compiz, etc.) ... which highly interfers with the way xbmc is rendering.

Make some tests with OpenELEC please. Does this also crash? Just testing wise. Are there concrete steps you do to provoke the crashes?

I think I'll have to start from the beggining using OpenElec, the question is that I want a whole operative system with XBMC inside it, and if possible, with an interface that looks newer than Windows 95.

For all the info I read it seems that every window managers on Linux are bulls**** and the only way of having an stable XBMC is OpenElec and if you want a computer with XBMC you need Windows. Why Microsoft can make an operative system where XBMC can run and it's impossible with Linux? Is this fault of XBMC, Linux, Window Managers....(Really, I don't understand, I don't understand why having an operative system in where you can play videos is so difficult). With this I really don't understan how can be people saying Linux is better than Windows.

I'm going to try OpenElec, but it's not what I need since it's simply a booteable XBMC. I want an complete HTPC, including web browsers, download programs, Libreoffice, Plex, Spotify, Skype... Something that with windows is assumed as "normal" in Linux looks to be impossible.

The most stranger of it is that during a year I've have Kubuntu+XBMC working reasonabily good, but from some time to now It's failing a lot, I've just try to watch some videos and after 5 minutes I've try to "rewind" and... system frozen (Those comments of Linux fanboys claiming at the stability of Linux compared to Windows makes me laught/cry).

What version of OpenElec do you reccomend me? I've see in the download site that latest stable is 4.2.1.
