Maybe you don't really need it for performance reasons but personally I like the split SD and USB.
So if your SD Card gets corrupt or you just want to make a clean install or something like that ... all your kodi configuration is still save on the USB Stick.
This saved me a lot of time everytime i need to reinstall OpenElec
