basicly its the similar workflow... but photoshop is much less complicated with movies ( and faaaar less features than AE ) - but for Animated Gifs its more than enough
just try to set the BLENDING MODE of the video layer with black backround to LINEAR DODGE - its like you have a green screen video and disable the green screen - and when you just drag and drop the video from outside, you will get direct the video as a SMART OBJECT and with this you can manipulate it like you want just play around with it a bit ^^
if you have a cpl of nice stock footage like fires,smokes,sparks etc you can do a lot of stuff realy easy some masks here and there and swooosh
