Is it possible to mod conq to make more items visible on the home menu? I have had complaints from my wife that its 'confusing'....

What items do you mean? The widgets or the actual menu its? Do you just mean you want to display more of the menu on screen? Both would have to be coded into the skin files. If you have any experience with xml, it's not too hard.
Anyways, I have a mod of conq that makes the vertical menu take up the full height. I also changed the widget provider for things like movies and TV shows that lets you set the number of items in widgets.
One of these days I'll fix up a few issues with it and release it.

It may not be quite what you're looking for, but after 'comments' (those who are married will understand) from the Mrs, I've extended the menu of my own Conq mod to show 5 items rather than three. (It also has most changes for Isengard, a few other home page mods, and far more widgets + up to 5 widgets per main menu item.) If you're interested it's at https://github.com/Ignoble61/skin.igconq
