Is there a way to set up Kodi so that albums with multiple cd's are played in sequential order? Right now I'm getting the tracks in sequential order but it's just a huge mess when you have multiples of track number 1, 2, 3,... which is exactly what you get when albums contain more than on cd.
Live albums become really weird when the songs get played out of order due to jumping back and forth on the different cds.
I'd greatly appreciate some tips on how to get this playing correctly.

I typically combine my 2-disc rips into one album, and just renumber the tracks accordingly (MP3Tag autonumber makes it easy).

i have mine properly tagged with disc number and track number in idv3 tags and they are sorted fine

Thanks for the suggestion, I've done something similar before but didn't feel like doing it that way this time. Since I posted my original question I actually found a way to sidestep the issue.
By changing how tags are viewed I can decide on the sort order. It looks a little odd perhaps but it works.

I use MP3TAG to tag my music and manually fix stuff like this. What I have found makes Kodi the happiest is Martinjn's answer - just set the Disc Number. 1/2 on the first disk, then 2/2 on the second disk. For this to work cleanly it is then best to name the album without the disk name.

The nice thing about doing this is you don't need to change much. Only those albums that are split across multiple disks need the Disk Number field fixed. No need to renumber all the tracks. (Which could get messy as that could lead to having to renaming them all too....)

This also means the tagging stays to a standard and is still happy in other media players.

I missed Martijn's post earlier, thanks for pointing it out to me. I've only named them 1,2,3,... Never thought it needed 1/2 and so on.
I'll take a look at it and see if I can get it working.

I always have quoted it as a fraction. So if there are FOUR disks to the album then it will be 1/4, 2/4, 3/4, 4/4. I assume that way Kodi (and other media players) know to look for more disks with the same name.

When I was cleaning up parts of my collection for Kodi I did find that I had to change the TAG for "Delicate Sound Of Thunder" as initially this had been named with the disk number in the Album Title. Which is logically wrong.

Gah, there's always something. I can't find a way to force Kodi to update the tags? Tried to update the whole library but that didn't work. It kept the old tags. Or rather, I don't know if it updated or not. Kody only displays disk 1, disk 2 ...
It doesn't say 1/2, 2/2...

I'm having the same issue as the first post (multi-cd albums ordered with sequential tracks number, regardless of the disc) but I also did tag my 2 CDs with TPOS 1 and 2, not 1/2 and 2/2.

Now, I tried to re-tag an album in the correct way (1/2 and 2/2) but I still have the same issue: I cleaned the library, re-imported everything, moved the albums to a different folder, re-tagged the album using Picard (just to be sure), re-imported it again... nothing changed, the order is always wrong.

Any further idea on how to fix this?

@xurr - maybe give us an example of how your files are named. And some example tags. Maybe we can spot something you've not noticed.

The key bits for the sorting to work are to get track numbers cleanly setup for the each disk. Which means each disk starts at 01 and counts upwards.

Then make sure the Disc Number is set for each track as a fraction.

I just tried to re-tag an album with MusicBrainz Picard, which seems to tag albums reliably as I read on this forum, and I can't see anything wrong in the tags. Still, tracks are mixed up (I see only one album from both CDs but the order is 01, 01, 02, 02, etc.). I imported them from a brand new directory in a library that contained only a different album from a different artist.

Picard likes stuffing lots of extra junk in there!

Personally I tag using my ripping tool (EAC) and then manually clean up with MP3TAG. I'm a fairly minimalist tagger so don't have all those extra fields Picard adds, but that shouldn't make any difference.

Only a couple of things come to mind:

1\ Have you noticed that your id3v1 tags DON'T have track numbers? Do you *need* id3v1 tags? If not, strip them out. I expect Picard has an option to not write that old ID3v1 tag. If you need to bulk strip ID3v1 tags from lots of tracks then I'd recommend MP3TAG.de to do that as it is good at bulk tag actions.

2\ Only other thing to try is manually changing the track numbering in the ID3v2 tags to 01, 02, 03 instead of the fraction Picard is using? Yes the fraction should work, but it is the other thing that I can see is different.

I use MP3TAG and it works for me. Regular numbering on the tracks and fractional on disk number. Quite honestly, I think it would work with regular numbers on disk number as well.

Thanks markusA. That rules out my option 2\. So I think this could be pointing at other TAGS still being in the tracks. MP3TAG would show us what tags are in use in the tracks, so I assume Picard can too.

Looking at the first post in this thread http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=198670), the third image down shows how someone has his Picard setup. xurr, how is your Picard different? Importantly make sure you have "clear existing tags" ticked.


markusA - did you find a way to make it update the whole library in the end? I usually just do it from the main GUI with right click and Query info for all artists. Though I have to admit I am a bit of a database hacker to and will often shut down KODI and mess around in the SQL.

I did try a lot of options, on that specific album, including stripping out id3v1 tags, removing most of Picard's stuff manually and setting its options according to that post, I tried v2.3 and v2.4, still it doesn't work (I removed the MyMusic db and reimported the album, just to be sure).

Now I have all the tracks like this (as simple as possible):

Maybe I'm doing something else wrong? I store those albums in two directories, named "The Wall - CD 1" and "The Wall - CD 2", there doesn't seem to be anything else worth mentioning.

Actually, I found something else that looks strange in Kodi. If I try to get the album information, they are loaded correctly (with 26 tracks), but then if I enter the album information section again and select "Tracks", it shows only 13 (from CD2). If I reload them, 26 tracks appear, then 13 again until the next reload.
