For the most demanding high speed sports viewing, I'm very happy with Interlaced 1920x1080i H264 @ around 15Mbps. Motion Adaptive VPU deinterlacing definately helps here on AML platforms. My parents 8 year old TiVo even supports H264 1080i

I see no reason why "interlaced must die" in that use scenario.
