Even if it is technically possible with a SoC design, manufacturers seldom update hardware decoders. VP9 Profile 2 will be a new hardware decoder. nVIDIA is likely to only update the Shield so that it supports encrypted VP9 Profile 0. If Google UHD movies are in profile 2 (for whatever reason), it is highly unlikely that the current Shield will support it in the future.

yes but the article is about bringing the updated VP9 profile to the current generation of the shield , no where does it mention a requirement for new hardware
