I have a quick question. I have 4 kodi boxes and a few tablets running off my NAS mysql server. Is there a way to have the tablets connect to the server outside the home network? It'd be cool to access all that media from the road.

you could use a VPN Connection to your home Network.
Or you forward the mysql port through your firewall and use a dynamic DNS. But in this option, everyone can connect/attack your mysql-Server.
Therefore you need to choose strong passwords, enable encryption/TLS, update your Server every month...

I'm sure I'll figure it out but never setup a vpn before. That sounds cool. Do you have any suggestions?

In some cases your Broadband Router or NAS has an inbuild VPN option, which you can use.
You would only need to enable and configure it (if you like you can name your manufacture and model).
Your tablet (if android) has usually VPN support
