remove vmware and nvidia drivers:
apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-vmware nvidia*

reinstall nvidia-current, then reboot.

I would follow fritsch's advice. Get rid of the ppa and install the nvidia drivers provided by ubuntu.

ok this is bizarre every time I install nvidia-current it puts VMware driver on.
I have remove all but Ubuntu ppa's

I can only get the proprietary nvidia driver to work and only if I don't use dkms, once it reboots I would have to install the driver again.

WTF have I done to this thing?

I have removed nvidia-current once again.

apt-cache policy nvidia-current
nvidia-current:
Installed: (none)
Candidate: 304.125-0ubuntu0.0.1
Version table:
304.125-0ubuntu0.0.1 0
500 http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty-updates/restricted amd64 Packages
500 http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty-security/restricted amd64 Packages
304.117-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty/restricted amd64 Packages

Anything else I could try ?

Ok I finally got it... after some tinkering around.

re-installing xserver-xorg-core .. libgl1-mesa-dri and remving xorg.conf

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

then re-installed nvidia-current.. YAY!!!

Now stop screwing with things.. LOL!

Thanks for pointing me in the correct direction.
