The old black bars cropping code was better, as it actually got rid of the black bars and the image properly filled my screen. The new code is leaving tons of black around content now. I don't know if the code is just worse, broken, or if that 20% limit is simply not enough to actually do the job properly. In any case, it is certainly annoying.

It has been removed completely for v15. The devs said that the existing code was very buggy and that it would be easier to start fresh than fix the existing crop-black-bars feature.

Perhaps that 20% limit could be raised, as it doesn't seem to be enough. I'm guessing that might be a trivial change.

I honestly don't know what the point of that setting is. I would ignore it and use the
video playback (wiki) zoom/view mode setting instead.
