How to create your own TV Show wide icon artwork

The best place to look for ideas is Amazon Instant Video seeing as this is what the Fire TV uses.
I've also found that fanart.tv 'TV Thumbs' can be used as long as removing the sides doesn't affect the image.
You can also create them using fanart and logo - the same way the skin does if there's no 'ftv' artwork available.
The best size is 640x480 to avoid any scaling problems at 1080p.

what method do you do to resize them without stretching the image?

Also here is a goodplace to find artwork: on the iTunes database, just type a TV show in http://bendodson.com/code/itunes-artwork-finder/

You could use those standard images which are 600x600 and cut the bottom/top so its 600x450, at least then it won't be stretched at all, but would be scaled bigger for 1080p but not by much.

I use the crop tool in Photoshop. You set the resolution (in this case 640x480) and you can move around a reisze the image and it keep the aspect ration.

Did some investigation (if you want to call it that) to find out how to extract high res images from Amazon Primes website. Found two ways to get high res images.
Note: These two places only have the high res images (1600x*** and 2560x***) all the other places are 500x***

Home
1. Right click on an image and click on "open image in new tab"
2. You should get a url like "http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/A1GrV5nNpAL._UY200_UY200_.jpg" The image id is between the '/' and '.' (dot)
3. Delete everything everything after the image id (its in bold above) and leave the .jpg. for example "http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/A1GrV5nNpAL.jpg"
4. Hit enter and you should get a higher red image

Tv show page
1. Go on any TV Show page (example) and at the bottom there should be a "Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought" section under the episodes.
2. Do the same as above and edit the url to only have the image id and you should have a high res image.

It seems there are a mixed bag of 1600x images and 2560x image but the TV Show pages tend to have the 2560x images.

enjoy! maybe someone can write a script to crawl through the website and get all these images!

edit: this shit took time! I basically had to keep clicking through tv shows, scrolling to the bottom to see what "others bought" and seeing if there are any images i needed. I'll let you lot carry on! I'll add some more if i get time.

I wonder if there is a way to extract these from the FTV box? there must be a cache of images on there somewhere!

Has anyone suffered problems with the widgets not populating on the ftv stick? It is working fine on the fire TV, but is slow to load up on the stick or doesn't load at all?

I have the same issue if I restart kodi and go down to movies right away. Stay on the search tab for a bit while it loads. then scroll down :]

I like this capability but it seems like configuration could be simplified greatly.

First, there's a known file: ftv.jpg. So, it seems like this should be detected by Kodi+FTV rather than requiring the user to manually configure each TV show.

Second, the aspect ratio of ftv.jpg should be automatically detected when a new asset is cached. For example, I downloaded images from iTunes as described above. I am perfectly happy to use the existing aspect ratio of these assets. And, this saves users the trouble of manually cropping each image. As is, the FTV skin seems to use the asset width as the constraint, then crop the height. Ideally, it would use the height as the constraint, then allocate the appropriate width for a given image.

Third, the home screen doesn't use the ftv.jpg image. It still uses the poster.jpg. Ideally, it would use the ftv.jpg (compare ATV's home screen).

Finally, I am not sure what resolution FTV is using for the image (e.g is it always 640x480). I have a 4K UHDTV. Since the jacket art from iTunes is very high resolution, it would be great if the FTV skin used a cached image appropriate for 4K TVs.

Not possible, would require changes to Kodi.

They are scaled so the image fills the dimensions with cropping.

You need to enable wide images in the home screen widgets setup.

Skins don't cache anything; Kodi does.

I have spent several days searching for artwork using the iTunes API and the "customer's who bought this" method for Amazon, described above. In short, it's easy to find virtually all my artwork via iTunes and very, very slow to find it via Amazon. The only problem is that iTunes' TV artwork is square and Amazon is rectangular and FTV was designed for the latter.

It's possible to set the TV Shows widgets for square but as soon as you select a particular widget on the home screen (e.g. Your, In Progress, Recently Updated,Kids), it will either show poster (default) or wide (if selected), but not square views. I'd like both the Home screen and the widget view--but not the season view--to show square art. Season view should show poster view since this is the only widely available artwork. Ideally, this would be an alternative setting to Wide View.

Separately, it's not clear to me what asset should be named for the square art to work with the FTV skin. I think "thumb.jpg". I can't name the square artwork "poster.jpg" since this messes up the More Information view. Ideally, the Home, all TV widgets, and the More Information screen could all use the square asset.

I really appreciate your help here Hitcher. It's a great skin.

P.S. I am using v2.2.18 and the Jarvis beta 5.
