Now that all is working using Openelec, with audio, what's the advantage of going to the trouble of going to Kodi?

Faster ATV1 / Kodi video startup / playback. Optimised code and a faster interface. Dynamic skip steps, especially in Kodi Isengard.

Just to make sure I've got this right... I cannot go directly from Openelec to Kodi or Isengard, correct?

No the OpenElec crew dropped ATV1 support when Kodi was released.
So did Crystalbuntu in fact, these Kodi 's are my personal custom compiled versions that reintegrate the CrystalHD card back into the Kodi code.
You don't actually need a Crystal HD card to run them tho.
