Solved [JAPAN only] HTTP 502 Bad Gateway error for most of add-ons, scripts, and skins
#76
It's quite weird actually.
I changed the config of the reverse proxy in front of the mirrorbits setup to use an alternative way to fill the X-Forwarded-For header and now it seems to work.
It does not explain (at all) why it was not working before, as both should be similar.

Thanks to @toinit for figuring out that the X-Forwarded-For header was mucking up, it pointed me in the right direction.
Thanks to @xexe for his "2 cents", which allowed me to actually test it.

oh no!!! I spoke too soon.
I'm getting 502 errors again.
here is the html from the link above

That html is completely right, and shows correct GeoIP identification.
I have no idea why it subsequently wouldn't work for Japanese users but works for the rest of the world.

I'm pretty much stumped now.

the mirrorbit page has direct links for the file and I can download from all mirrors without problem.
It is just the kodi link that gives me the 502
http://mirrors.kodi.tv/addons/isengard/r...-1.0.0.zip

Things were working well for me for about an hour and then suddenly back to the 502s
no router reboots or system reboots or anything.

It really doesn't make any sense. When you request the file you get a simple redirect back. To make the redirect the host needs to know where you are.

It looks up your IP in the GeoipLite database and then replies where you should go.
From the html you uploaded I can see the redirector knows where to send you, and you yourself stated you can download from those locations.
I fail to see why you would get the 502 in between.

In case you use ANY proxies, or caches, make sure to clear them.
Does your provider use a caching proxy by any chance ?

Kib,
The redirect seems to work for me now! (1/27/2016 7:03am local time) Your efforts are much appreciated (arigatou gozaimasu).

For what its worth, there is a huge trans-Pacific pipe from Japan to the U.S. West Coast and speeds would be really good if we were simply redirected to USA mirrors somewhere rather than to geographically nearby countries. But it is working now and that is the main thing. The largest city in the world thanks you.

EDIT - wow. after working exactly once, the link now stopped working! I have no idea why. Like the previous poster said, the geoIP info seems correct. Here is my pastebin
http://pastebin.com/9WGDE5rt

Interestingly, I loaded the link you provided after it worked and it showed that I was redirected to a server in Europe. That is why I mentioned the pipe to USA from Japan. But when I tried again and it stopped working the link you provided says I am getting redirected to US West Coast.

no proxies or caches in play as far as I'm aware - but in any case - tested on my mobile carrier (completely different company) and still get the 502

Same here. I tested on SofbankBB FTTH and my NTT Docomo LTE mobile connection. Two of the biggest providers in Japan (and probably in the world). I have access to an AsahiNet DSL line at work but I might not be in the office until next week and I doubt if this is a proxy/cache issue at the provider end anyway.

Sorry for the bad news but still getting 502 errors in the Tokyo area when using mirrors.kodi.tv. The weird thing is that it worked ONCE yesterday. That is the only time I have seen it work in months.

you know what is bizarre . . .?
I've just been browsing through http://mirrors.kodi.tv/addons/isengard/

the 502 error seems very random
e.g.
http://mirrors.kodi.tv/addons/isengard/c...-1.0.1.zip = 502
http://mirrors.kodi.tv/addons/isengard/c...-1.0.1.zip = 502
http://mirrors.kodi.tv/addons/isengard/c...-1.1.0.zip = download success
http://mirrors.kodi.tv/addons/isengard/c...-1.0.0.zip = download success
http://mirrors.kodi.tv/addons/isengard/c...-1.0.1.zip = download success
http://mirrors.kodi.tv/addons/isengard/m...-2.5.1.zip = download success
http://mirrors.kodi.tv/addons/isengard/m...-3.6.2.zip = 502
etc
etc

very very random.
some things download successfully and some give the 502.

But it is not random. Some links don't work and some do. I just checked and I get the exact same results on the list of items you posted.

I originally figured out there was a problem because certain dependencies would not dl and stumbled on this forum when searching for the cause.

But most items have been dl'ing fine. I thought that was clear. The thing that was strange to me is that a couple days ago after the Kodi admin changed some settings, the link to the Amber skin dependency started working. But then it stopped working again. It just really seems to be some kind of issue with the server. But why Japan only?

I believe that in Japan there is an additional proxy that is transparant for everyone.
The fact that it suddenly works if you add "X-forwarded-for = unknown" seems to collaborate that idea.

My workaround was to not add the ip to the list of proxies but to overwrite the X-forwarded-for header completely, but the problem with this is, that it disables anyone else who uses a decent proxy to use the mirrors.

The fact that is different on different downloads does not make sense at all, knowing how the system works. It wasn't clear to me you were experiencing this.

If anything, this is becoming more confusing.
#87
not sure if this is of any help . . .
but I have been in Japan for a number of years and using Kodi for probably the past five or six years.
It has always worked perfectly as far as installing addons goes . . . . until late 2015.
So something changed for Japanese users in late 2015 - finding out what changed might help point in the right direction.
sorry for my simplistic summary.
#88
you could try those to test to check for transparent proxies:
http://www.lagado.com/proxy-test
http://www.lagado.com/tools/cache-test

To further debug this, we'd need someone willing to live test with us while we run a network trace.
Best would be to meet on IRC. And we'll need your IP for this.

@wsnipex fyi this is also hurting our Jenkins builders at times where we get a HTTP504 error
