WeTek Core (24p HD Netflix / HD Audio / Lollipop / OpenELEC / 4K / HEVC)

The product page is up: https://wetek.com/product/wetek-core
It's not on their store page yet.

Do you think this is able to decode 1080p h.264 hi10p without stuttering?

And it says it supports "8-bit H265." Does this mean only software decoding for main 10?
The AMLogic S812-H in the WeTek Core can only hardware decode 4K/2K/1080p / 8-bit codecs.

My OpenELEC - S805, does not play Main10 HEVC stuff, and the S812-H will be no different.
As for 1080p h.264 hi10p, I doubt the SoC has the necessary CPU grunt to software decode this as well.

I have some 1080p h264 hi10p samples ready to test so will be able to tell you definately early this week. Wink

Thanks for checking that. And here's a particularly demanding one that I'm hoping I can get to work perfectly on a cheap/small Kodi box one day:

Suspect Hi10p H264 will only ever be supported by software decoding - so you'll need to wait until cheap/small boxes get enough CPU power to do so? The only possible hardware acceleration would be if an HEVC 10bit decode implementation brought H264 10bit stuff to the table to.

There is no real source for H264 Hi10p consumer content (Bluray, DVB, ATSC, DVD and online streaming services that use H264 all use H264 8 bit) - so no real reason for manufacturers to implement it.

It is purely used by people encoding or re-encoding (usually 8 bit sources) themselves, and usually for material they are distributing through less than official routes.

10bit HEVC is a different matter, as officially sanctioned content is likely to use this format, so it is being supported by hardware acceleration.

Nice review
What hardware did you use to check the 23.976/59.94 framerate ?
Does 29.97 is supported ?

Good review. Been undecided between one of these and an nvidia shield. My 10% discount and better de-interlacing looks like it will push me to the Core.

+1, nice review. wrxtasy, have you tested VC-1 23.976 and the more problematic 29.970 (1080i) files?

Thanks for the review! I've got a few questions:

Can you use the microphone to do searches in 3rd party apps like Youtube? If not, how does it work (sorry if this is a dumb question, I've never used Android TV).

How well does it software-decode 1080p h264 and h265 in 10 bit? I expect there will be stuttering, but could you confirm?

Old fashioned hardware called EYEballs Eek
Using a bunch of 23.976 / 24 / 25 / 29.97 / 30 / 50 / 59.94 / 60fps test clips. (White Horizontal Scrolling Bars)

I've never watched a movie on the ATV1 / RPi2 / C1 that has not had proper 24p video sync. I am very sensitive to 3:2 pulldown judder and also notice an additional video frame inserted every 41 seconds you get when you play 23.976fps video output at 24Hz. (i.e. what you see on a LOT of Android devices)

Netflix HD tested with the Example 23.976 clip.

Behind the scenes WeTek, MINIX and HardKernel supply modified Linux Kernels that do Frame Rate Automation on AMLogic devices, there is a degree of sharing that happens. This is exactly why I would never recommend an Android device unless you know how good the Kernel and drivers are.

If I remember correctly Noggin, tested the C1 with one of these such Kernels running in OpenELEC and confirmed 23.976 video output on specialised test equipment.

@wrxtasy will you be moving from your Odroid C1 to the Wetek Core? If so other than HD Netflix what differentiates the two?

Sorry for the many questions, I get paid Thursday and also had a little windfall at the bookies last night. I'm reasonably certain of going with the C1+ as I think it will do everything I need/want but your Wetek Core review HD intrigued me.

I'm having trouble finding those samples in my files, everything seems to be Progressive. Got any links ?

This is a AMLogic 8-bit decode device only, 10-bit stuff stutters and you get picture breakup. Its worse when software decoding.

I've likely not got something set correctly, the Voice search is not working for me at the moment when I hit the button and speak. It may be the Aussie accent. I'm a bit unfamiliar with Android as well, so not up with this whole voice search stuff. Will get back to you.

Don't think it is released for another couple of weeks. I recall seeing a count down on their site a few days ago. At that point it said twenty days.
