...and modern processors also have larger and faster level-2 cache but more importantly they also feature highly optimized Streaming SIMD Extensions (SSE) which are really good performance enhancements for video decoding, that only get better with each generation.
CPU clock cycles are not eveything and both CPU manufactures and video decoder programmers/developers realize this. Read this article:
