I have an Android phone development system with an LCD screen and an HDMI output capability. Running KODI on it works well, even decoding 4k-resolution H.265/HEVC video at full frame rate, except that I don't get the full resolution on the HDMI output. I only get the LCD's native resolution scaled up to fill the TV's screen.
I understand that Android now has a Presentation Mode which should have the hooks to enable a second screen, and thereby achieve native resolution output on a TV attached via HDMI. My suggestion, then, is to add Presentation Mode support to the Android version of the app, allowing the LCD screen to provide the user interface, but having the decoded video shown at full TV resolution (4k, HD, etc.) over an attached HDMI cable.
