Do you live in a region with very bad power distribution? I'm wondering why you believe a PC to be a specific fire hazard? Why is it more of a hazard than an ADSL modem/router, cable modem etc., or an Android TV box?

You can run a TV Headend backend on a low-power ARM platform should you wish, or a NAS device.

I suspect the biggest fire hazard is likely to be a no-name Chinese PSU used to power a DC device. Like a no-name Android box.

Wild life (little geckos are big panel killers and the cocjrisches and bugs are like plagues in the tropics)! But seriously, I agree about the android box power adaptors, they worry me. But PC's are big noisy hot things with lits of electricity, leaving themnoj 365 days a year with all the fluff and wild life is not desirable. Home servers occasionally catch fire and this thing will be in old chipboard cabinet.

If they can get Linux working in parallel to a shield I can run the USB sticks on Linux siftwate in.the background and read the files in Kodi. If only we had a android that allowed the Linux to be windowed. There are alternative OS versions of android that support multiple apps in windows.

So if they manage to do this (hopefully with full nvidia accelerated hardware support enabled) then I can buy a Shield TV and use that.

Anyway, I picked up a LG 3D bluray 500GB twin tuner recorder for around $29 new last week. Good discount compared to the list price at introduction of $499, but the TV image looks like a $29 TV box, and the smart TV apps are hardly there etc. The last DVD box I owned I returned, but at $29, I think I'll keep it Smile

The future standards actually cover 12 bits. But seriously, for what I want to do I need 10 bit for camera stuff.

I can relate to that, had a Gecko fall off the ceiling into my lap just recently, whilst I was on the throne. Scared the living shit out of me! (literally). Then there are another pair that live in the Letterbox, guarding my mail Wink

Same here, i need to run tvheadend server at the box with dvb-t and sat receivers, i also want to connect optical r/w via USB
And i am also seeking what to buy
Yes, they are made for Android, BUT, there are people making linux "ROMs" like Openelec. Recently found out there is such a linux based ROM available for T8 box, which is S812 box and also has SATA controller (supporting a disk up to 2 tera i think)
Prices, around the area of 100 bucks... much less for S805 (if you dont need 4K decode)
Where is the catch? Support, what else... If it works, all good, if not then what?
It can get complicated with AMLogic devices...

The catch is AMLogic devices are running a pretty old version of the Linux Kernel v3.10.xx compared to Kernel v4.xx when running Linux on Intel machines or the RPi2. (I believe the reason is for Android OS compatibility with AMLogic)

What this means is only a very specific set DVB-T usb Tuners will worked compared to the machines I just mentioned as you need drivers and modules support for the DVB-T built into the Kernel itself for them to operate as a plug and play device when running OpenELEC.

This list here is a good indication of the Kernel version required to support various DVB-T tuners.
http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/DVB-T_USB_Devices

Even then you have to have a look at what is in the Kernel itself for the specific device in question.
As an example here is a list for the DVB-T's supported in the Kernel on the ODROID C1+
(search for DVB-T)
https://github.com/hardkernel/linux/blob..._defconfig
http://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f=...00#p116392

I use a C1+ as a TvHeadend server and OpenELEC / Kodi device and use a usb DVB-T (Sony PlayTV dual tuner) with it, this is supported in the Kernel as:
Code:
CONFIG_DVB_DIB7000M=m
CONFIG_DVB_DIB7000P=m

Then there is Firmware for it packaged with OpenELEC: (dvb_usb_dib0700)
https://github.com/OpenELEC/dvb-firmware...r/firmware
The Sony PlayTV DVB-T uses a very common dibComm chipset.

I've also just recently added support for the MyGica T230/August T210v2 DVB-T/T2/C usb stick in the OpenELEC I use.
Other confirmed working DVB-T/T2/C Tuners are the Sony_CXD2820 and its variants:

See this thread here:
http://forum.odroid.com/viewforum.php?f=114

Noggin has setup a IP networked, Elgato Netstream 4Sat tuner in combo with a TvHeadend server on this device recently:
http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=...pid2180369

The very pertinent question I think would be, could you run 2 x dual usb Tuners on the same device or would you need to use different brands of usb sticks due to internal usb Kernel identification conflicts ?
