START HERE - Pick the Right Kodi Box (updated Dec 2020)
So if i have read this right. Odroid C2 will not handle 4k hdr, but can handle 4k at other rates. What about Dolby Sound, ATMOS, DTS X, etc
I have many blu-ray film of different kinds on my local NAS, and also access to Netflix and Amazon will be needed...

Answer = NVIDIA Shield for your requirements.

1080p/4K Netflix and Amazon Video streaming

Q. I need a Kodi box that can play 1080p or 4K DRM copy protected video streams such as Netflix, HBO etc. ?
NOTE: Unless you have a HDMI connected Dolby Digital Plus Audio receiver, expect 2.0 Audio only from DD+ DRM streaming Apps running on Android TV platforms. Only very specific devices, noted below can run the Amazon Video App properly.

1080p/4K Android Netflix / Amazon Video is only possible on media players boxes that include Widevine L1 & HDCP 1.x/2.2 support in device Firmware.
  • NVIDIA Shield (4K HDR Netflix / 4K HDR Amazon Video)
  • Xiaomi Mi Box (4K Netflix - no HDR)
  • Amazon Stick/FTV1 + FTV2 (4K) (Amazon Video)
  • Intel / AMD x86-64 computers with GeForce GT 1030 or later Nvidia graphics card solution running Win10, using either dedicated Apps or a Web Browser.
  • WeTek's Core (1080p touchscreen Netflix, audio is 2.0 only)
  • WeTek Hub & Play2** (4K Netflix with ATV ROM)
  • ** ATV Netflix on Play2 also allows 5.1 Audio via SPDIF, joining the Amazon FireTV1 that can also do this.
  • Apple TV4 & 4K TV5
  • MECOOL M8S Pro + (S905X) (1080p Netflix with 3rd party Android TV Firmware)

Also there is a decent ATV ROM on the Freaktab Website for that box if you want to dual boot.

Do you have any thoughts regarding the MECOOL M8S PRO L versus the MECOOL M8S PRO non L version.

It seems that the L version uses DDR3 ram as compared to DDR4 ram on the non L version. Can't seem to find any comparisons.

There is no information about an L version on Videostrong website, and the sellers sites are saying the L is a newer improved model.

Seems odd since DDR4 would be a better option I would think.

L version has deep discounts as opposed to the non L version.

Does anyone have any advice how to configure a Logitech Harmony remote for the MECOOL M8S Pro +? I got the basic functions, but for instance the Info button isn't mapped. I'm primarily running LIBREELEC on the box.
Ps. I know that I can do keymapping in Kodi, but I can't get basic functionality like pause to work for the life of me.

This is NOT a LibreELEC config or help thread !! - seek help on the LibreELEC forums or Freaktab.

There is a dedicated thread for the M8S Pro (L) over on The Freaktab Website

And I will repeat this again, you will NOT get Amazon Video working properly on anything but the devices I have already listed above.

Amazon keep VERY tight control over which exact devices their Apps run properly on.
Just adding HDCP and Widewine DRM to a box is not going to do it.

Has this been confirmed again? It looks like it stopped working at some point of time because WeTeK never had an agreement with Netflix for 4K streaming.

I read most of this forum post and I am still unsure as to which device to choose.
Newbie of course but work in the Information Technology field for 25 years.
I am considering cutting the cord and I am looking to replace what I have, live TV, new channels etc.
Can someone point me in the direction for the best build for this scenario?
I am also considering a paid service, IPTV, Youtube TV, hulu etc. I have prime currently. Thanks.

Please read Post #2147 above and realize only very specific devices support Amazon (Prime) Video.
Basically you are looking at a Android TV - NVIDIA Shield and something like a HD Homerun Tuner to feed LiveTV into it.

Amazon FireTV's have lousy TV deinterlacing. Not recommended for anything to do with TV viewing.

Start off by thinking of it as a labour of love. Busmans holiday, relaxation from the grind of your job etc etc (by the way I have over 30 years IT experience and currently manage a network of over 11,000 devices). You will never find perfection but will love the challenges it brings.

I started off with an Enigma2 box and a motorised satellite dish a few years ago. Tweaked that until the Openvix image and Sky skin were my preferred choice. And that was that.

I have bought four S905/X 'Kodi' boxes over the past couple of years. Knackered one in totally 'playing' with it and bricking it (yes really!!!) and another just died on me. Currently have a S905 and a S905X device - searched Amazon and got a cheap one from there (one of them has DVD-S connection and I played around with TVHeadend as a direct replacement for my satellite box but wiped it and just using it as straight IPTV.

People will have differing opinion on the actual configuration of course. I am using Libreelec as my o/s with Kodi Krypton 17.4 and up to last weekend Aeon Nox skin (it is really customisable). But wiped my box at the weekend and ended up with Aeon MQ7 skin which I think is awesome. Actually feel I now have a setup I am happy with. I have shares setup to my PC 'server' where box sets and videos are stored plus another share to my music collection. Also got IPTV (not endorsing it of course!). Only 'bug/anomoly' is that I also use a service which sits in the middle between my M3U IPTV link and provided my a fully working EPG. But this isn't displaying under Aeon MQ& (yet!)

So I'd get a cheap S905/X device and play around to your hearts content. Ypu are looking at under £40. Then if you are hooked go for one of the more expensive devices that allows hard disk connection for recording.

Maybe as a tip start off by installing to a USB stick. Most the cheap devices come with Android with a Kodi option. Use something like Rufus to create a bootable USB stick and boot from there. I ended up flashing to the internal NAND which totally wipes Android (thank god) and I boot up form this rather than internal but there are (slight) risks doing this.

Above all have fun.

Thanks wrxtasy, I like the hdhomerun, was actually looking at one of their devices a few days back.
I was wondering, how does dual booting from the shield / kodi work.
I think if I could dual boot the shield and also use the HD Homerun / Tuner I may just cut that cord.

About 4 years ago I ordered a pre-configured MINIX device from ebay but it never worked very well.
Its a Neo 8x-H plus Octo Core. Can I run the latest version of kodi on this or is the hardware outdated.

Hello, I'm looking to get a android box without breaking the bank and after reading through this thread, some threads on libreelec forums and freaktab, narrowed my choice down to the Mecool M8S Pro L. From what I understand, the new Libreelec firmware from Kszaq seems to have resolved the S912 issues, is this correct? Would it be okay to go with a S912 chip or is it better to go with S905D.

I'll be using this with a 4k TV so want something that won't lag or have issues. Use an old laptop now and while it feels smoother than the S805 box I have in menu, there is a slight lag in 1080p HEVC videos and after trying multiple methods to resolve the issue, I think the CPU is just too old to decode the codec properly. Hence I want a box that can handle 1080P and 4K HEVC. Thank you for the help.
