Budget AMLogic S9xx Media Player Options
I got 3 movies to try out but haven't had the chance to test them. I will have access to a 4k hdr tv this weekend. I'm wondering if the 100Mbs will be the bottleneck. Would a s912 be better for this? It sounds like its firmware isn't quite there yet. Is that not true?

Too many variables when streaming across a network. Plus Kodi Krypton would need a video cache tweak as well I would think. Plug in a USB stick or HDD instead.

I think you need to read this thread before an Echo chamber of Parroted S912 info bounces around the this Sub-forum Wink

Please look in the LibreELEC Forums for further information: LibreELEC AMLogic subforum

Those first 2 links are out of date now.
For the current image and database look in this thread on the libreelec site, select S905 / S905X Jarvis or Krypton and look in the first post for the downloads.

Libreelec for amlogic s912 is here

Be aware LibreELEC on the S912 is:

- Very Experimental - due to using hacked together Android GPU drivers.
- Displaying graphical artifacts on the User Interface
- There is no Kodi dynamic refresh switching
- Unstable as a Kodi media player - subject to crashes and reboots
- AMLogic seems to be unwilling to Licence from ARM the - T820 Mali Linux GPU drivers that are really needed for LibreELEC on S912's.

I'm going to squash any information that the S912 is a viable LibreELEC Kodi platform right here right now.

It offers NOTHING so far as Audio and Video - LibreELEC Kodi media playback is concerned over the relatively stable AML S905x LibreELEC boxes.

Bigger number are not better !

No - S905 decodes 10bit SDR HEVC/H265 content just fine (Kodi doesn't have a 10bit output rendering path on the platform yet though - so whilst 10 bit is decoded, it is converted to 8 bit for output).

What the S905 doesn't have support for is HDR, but it will play 10bit SDR with no problems at all.

(10 bit video has been in use in pro circles for SDR production since the mid-90s at least. Benefits are reduced banding on saturated blue gradients, less banding on fades to black etc.)

HDR requires 10 or 12 bit video, but not all 10 or 12 bit video is HDR...

I didn't know that noggin, I'll admit I thought they were the same thing.

Plain and simple:

- S905: 2160p60 + BT.2020 + 10Bit
- S905X: 2160p60 + BT.2020 + 10Bit + HDR10
- S912: 2160p60 + BT.2020 + 10Bit + HDR10 + Dolby Vision

Dolby Vision may however be available to other devices in the future via software decoding, if the hardware is up for it. I don't know if that will apply to S905(X) or not.

Slight correction here...

- S912: 2160p60 + BT.2020 + 10Bit + HDR10 + (Non Working) Dolby Vision

There is no Dolby Vision Firmware support I know of on any AMLogic platform. Its not going to magically work out of the box.

This is not right. S905 SoC doesn't support BT.2020 or 10-bit output. It is a SoC limitation. S905X and S912 can, but LibreELEC is limited to 8-bit output on S905X at the moment. BT.2020 is enabled only in 4K 50/60Hz mode.

I find all the talk about Dolby Vision software rather amusing. Just don't be surprised by the number of devices (SoCs) that will actually be certified for Dolby Vision.

Sorry, apparently I was misinformed.

So the only 4K capability of the regular S905 is 2160p60 @ BT.709 @ 8 Bit?

Not quite. Pretty certain 2160/60p 10bit ITU 709 4:2:0 stuff will decode, but wesk05 mentions only 8bit output, so AIUI you get 10bit decode but only 8bit output?

(I've played 2020 stuff, but suspect this was output as 709 with no conversion?)

Correct. You can decode 10-bit HEVC, HDR, but the output will be 8-bit Rec.709 SDR with no tone/gamut mapping. Actually none of the HDR Android boxes seem to be doing tone or gamut mapping. They are all simply dithering (or may be even truncating) it.
