Hello guys,

I would like to ask you for your support. I am new in linux usage and also Kodi usage. So please have a patient with me:-) I just installed new Debian server (uses mostly as a NAS machine). The serve is connected directly to my TV. I am facing issue with start of KODI after fresh install.

Server configuration:
Debian version - Linux beasthome 4.3.0-1-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.3.3-5 (2016-01-04) x86_64 GNU/Linux

That's a special kodi version debian makes for you. We don't know what is in there.

You are not member of video / audio group and cannot access audio device

Thank you for your quick reply. Because I have only Kodi on my server for now I decided to reinstall my box to Ubuntu. Unfortunately, I have the same issue.

How exactly do you start kodi ?

Well I try to describe my problem more precisely.

I am building something like home NAS box. Which offer also possibility to start Kodi to play movies from that NAS box. Because it supposed to use this box for more things (saving of photos, movies, downloading from net, and so on) I don't plan to use Kodi with autostart option. Kodi will be started only on "request". The NAS box is connected to TV via HDMI port. The graphic card is in CPU (Skylake).

Hardware specification:
- motherboard - GIGABYTE H170N-WIFI
- CPU - Intel Core i3-6100T
- 16GB RAM
- 120GB dedicated SSD for OS
- RAID 5 for data

I supposed that there will be many hits, how to install Kodi on linux server without desktop environment. Because based on my opinion is one of the best usage of this great app :-) Unfortunately it seems it is not exactly true.

What I did.
I installed Ubuntu server with minimal packages. In the fact I install it only with OpenSSH option. No more.

Software specification:
- Ubuntu 14.04 "Trusty Tahr" installed only with OpenSSH packages

What I am looking for?
In the fact I would like to ask you to help me to create some easy "HOW TO" for all newbies as I am to be able to install Kodi easily on their servers, NASes :-)

Forget it ... 14.04 with Skylake won't work at all. Use 15.10 or better even later. See the first sticky topic in the linux forum for a howto based on 15.10 server.

Btw. the kodi forum is not a "help users install and configure Ubuntu" - we cannot support that.
