Is there a way to have Kodi automatically play regular videos like movie trailers with dvdplayer and actual movies with dsplayer/madvr. My Kodi is setup to play trailer/theme automatically when you scroll over movie, but the dsplayer/madvr attempts to play these videos at 24 fps. So I would like for the dvdplayer to handle this job rather than dsplayer.

Try adding http|https to the protocols field of DVDPlayer merits.

The videos I want DVDplayer to handle are stored in each movie folder and are named theme.mp4. Would http/https protocols still apply? Thanks

No, in that case, you would have to name these files with special naming and then tell DVDPlayer to play files with a certain text string in its -File name (e.g. DVD: Movie Name (Year) (DVD)).
