Is it possible to have thumbnails show for recordings? I have tried placing a JPEG in the same folder and name as the recording TS file, but it doesn't work, even after clearing all PVR data

This is currently disabled for PVR in general because it caused deadlocks. I don't know the current state of that.

Do you know if it's a problem with thumbnail generation or the displaying of thumbnails? ie might it work if I have a program extract them?

The problem is that pvr addons can only handle a single connection and thumbnail generation runs on separate threads. Once I split the video part of pvr into the inputstream api, it will work. But this is post v17

No, the recordings are on the backend and kodi does not have access to those.
