I subscribe to a paid sub service and receive a large number of channels, many of which I do not use. Is there any way to edit the list within PVR simple client or kodi 16 or do I need to do this through the sub provider

You can:
1) edit a list from iptv simple client using the channel manager function. "c" button on a channel.
2) use a text editor to remove lines you don't need
3) use a software like this
i use point 3 for mine.
