Very interesting that Kodi can do that. I tested this function on my near 4K resolution 13" screen laptop Wink Using Kodi MVC from this thread I can go to System -> Display and select options for current view. From the pull down menu I can select "Interlaced". The screen will produce interlaced 3D image of Kodi desktop on non 3D laptop screen. Any pupped up option window will have interlaced out of focus left / right eye image as being closer.

For the 3D movie to look good Kodi or video driver would have to take double frames from MVC stream and interlace them into one 4K image on the fly. TV needs to preserve this image without much of processing or interpolation to keep everything as original without any artifact from fixing uneven lines.

It solves Kaby Lake HDMI 2.0 issue for 4K passive glasses displays but not for projectors or the rest of people with active glasses.

P750MMX or anybody with OLED.
Can you guys select hardware in the Kodi for 3D current display mode and confirm that it is showing 1080p @ 24fps (my projector says "Frame Packing"). Just double check that image is better "Interlaced" when compared to "Hardware" 3D mode?

It should be the same thing at the end when seen on the same screen. When hardware is selected the up-conversion to 4K display is done by the TV and when interlaced to 3840x2160 the PC / Kodi / video card is doing the conversion.
Reply
I can't select the hardware option with my current hardware and software setup (4k all the way). I must go back to the HDMI 1.4 port and choose the 1080p resolution on desktop and in Kodi. When "hardware" comes available as a choice, the screen goes black and doesn't come back again. I must (hard)shutdown Kodi and start it up again. So that's a no go on my latest hardware build, but....

I have a lot to choose from here in ta house and my previous HTPC, based on the 4th generation i5 Haswell platform, is still in reach of my Oled TV and can be easy attached. Can't remember if the "hardware" choice gave me problems with this Kodi build and my Oled, sorry.

I also still have a 51" Full HD active 3D plasma where an 3th generation i3 Ivy Bridge HTPC with HD 4000 iGP is mounted on the back.

My computer monitor has a passive 3D mode and can use the Kodi 3D "hardware" mode, but shows only half the resolution, and it can't show the sharpness, colors and dept that I see on the Oled in Kodi Interlace mode.

I compared several systems the last period and without a doubt the Oled with Kaby Lake in 4k setup displays the best 3D picture, in Interlaced mode, way better then my Active 3D plasma (which uses the "hardware" choice in this Kodi build). My plasma was reviewed as one of the best active 3D TV's but crosstalk was never completely gone and brightness was also a issue.

P750mmx, thanks for review. Try to connect your i5 HTPC to OLED when you get a chance just to double check and compare on the same system. The i5 with HDMI 1.4 should also do 4K at 24 fps interlace mode as well as hardware frame packing. This way the type of TV will not interfere with quality of image.

Let us know your observations.

@safcsat or anyone else,

I would like to ask you as a fellow LG E6 owner for your settings for Kodi / Windows / Intel Display Driver version etc. As I mentioned yesterday my E6 doesn't upscale 1080p 3D content to 4K, which is very weird. Maybe I have a faulty setting or something.

This is what I get when I playback a 3D iso with latest Kodi MVC build (20170201-68e6a3a-msdk_mvc_wip):
http://imgur.com/0RBe9Df
http://imgur.com/Vr80E1E

My current setup:

- LG OLED 65E6V version 04.30.95
- Asrock Beebox-S 7200U connected with HDMI 1.4 port to my TV's HDMI 2.0a port directly
- Windows 10 Education with latest updates
- Intel Display Driver version 15.45.14.4590 (latest version available through Intel Driver Update Utility 2.7)
- Resolution Windows 10 set at 1920x1080p (3D) and on Intel Graphics settings at 1920x1080@60Hz
- Kodi resolution is at 1920x1080p@60Hz
- hardware based is selected as Stereoscopic 3D mode

What am I doing wrong? Any help would be appreciated.

Of-course your E6 is upscaling to 4k, if not, an untouched 1080p signal would be filling a quarter of your TV screen and not the whole screen.

Why don't you use the HDMI 2.0 port on the BeeBox, there is a reason for that? Maybe you did explain this before but I don't remember if so.

That will be because, 3D does not work on that port.

This make sense, but I'm only paranoia why it doesn't show 2160p when I press the info button on the remote of my tv.

3D is broken on HDMI 2.0 port. Intel hasn't fixed this yet so that's why you need HDMI 1.4 port if you want full 3D.

But did you try it with all settings in 4k resolution, desktop and Kodi, and choose the Interlaced method?

This is what the guys with OLED and all 4K passive glasses are saying that you can use HDMI 2.0 port set the resolution to 4K in Kodi and play 3D files in interlaced mode. 3D to 4K interlaced screen conversion is done in the computer and TV gets single 4K frames at 24 fps. No further processing or 3D mode in the TV is not necessary as long at the screen is mapped 1 to 1 pixel.

Yep - it's not really interlaced, it's more interleaved. Rather than alternate lines being from two different points in time, it's alternate lines for each eye-view. This works because, whether the TV is in 3D mode or not, the permanent alternate-line polarisation used in passive 3D displays is always present. As long as you can ensure that alternate eye-views go to alternate 2160p lines and there is a 1:1 mapping, you should get 3D when you put on your glasses.

What Kodi would need to implement is a 3D playback mode that takes the MVC decoded video and scales each eye to 3840x1080, and then maps all the odd lines in the 2160p frame to lines from one eye, and all the even lines in the 2160p frame to lines from the other eye. How easy this is to do with shaders etc.? I have no idea!

HOWEVER - because the TV is not in a 3D mode internally, any TV on-screen graphics will be unaware of the 3D nature of the display. Probably not a major issue.

This technique would only work for UHD Passive displays though - not active.

I tested and compared several things, no explanation for some things I saw, but that maybe will be cleared up later. I will add more text when I forgot something.
Here it comes..

Besides what one can read above, the Kaby Lake iGP is a step up regarding Image Quality comparing it to the Haswell iGP, no doubt about this. I never notice this before, but tonight I did for the first time.

If one should have some follow up questions, let's go.

Edit: there seems to be an answer above for my vague experience, great !!

OK, To get your TV to Show the 2160p resolution for 3D, you need to connect the HDMI to he HDMI 2.0 port and change the resolution of your AsRock Beebox to 3820X2160,
Now when you play 3D MVC your LG 3D TV will display it movie as Top/Bottom
Use Magic Remote change the 3D settings
Now the Display INFO will show 2160p.
