Linux Video playback and FF no longer smooth
#1
I understand that its in development flux but a bit of feedback may help fine tune this.

Pre https://github.com/xbmc/xbmc/pull/9542 video playback was smooth throughout playback duration, even fast forwarding from 2x to 16x was fairly smooth

Post https://github.com/xbmc/xbmc/pull/9542 playback is quality erratic throughout duration, it can be smooth one moment and then it starts to have some type of continuous micro stuttering that can last anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes (or longer) then goes back to smooth for some random period of time and then it suddenly switches back to the stuttering.

Fast forwarding is utterly broken no matter what speed.

Doesnt matter what file it is, codec, audio type or if its passthrough or not.
Sync playback to display is disabled permanently

the file tested is called Sliver.mp4

Debug log isn't really helpful to my eyes but here it is. http://pastebin.com/raw/kDfrpGVX

Ive reverted to be7827889f45dbbde9e61ca0ed218fcda19014c5 for the mean while to be able to use HTPC.

After some more testing, FF is fine now as it was I think, but playback is still randomly course it seems, sometimes even have the impression that bringing up OSD during playback it triggers the stuttering but not always. in either case with or without OSD it seems its not quite right.

Ill grab a log later.

Here we are

@FernetMenta would https://github.com/xbmc/xbmc/pull/9607 help this issue?

with (17.0-ALPHA1 Git:2016-04-12-1caa3e5) its still very much an issue with playback being jumpy and unsmooth

file played Elementary.S04E20 Art Imitates Art.mkv

very course jumpy playback 10/20 seconds after starting playback and stays like that throughout duration

Sadly that hasnt fixed the problem, it seems to have helped, but still experiencing course stuttering randomly and throughout playback duration, the First PR fixed microstutters and it reduced frequency somewhat, But the stutters became more pronounced, now with this last PR, when I start to think its fixed its starts doing it again and back to randomly coming and going
.

please try a Milhouse build. He reported it fixed on his ION.

Milhouse? is that Openelec or similar? I dont use none of that and rather not have to reinstall the whole HTPC.

You can run it from USB stick. It's LibreElec, see here: http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=269815
First decide what functions / features you expect from a system. Then decide for the hardware. Don't waste your money on crap.

I'd say it's mostly fixed, as I still get occasional dropped frames (sometimes a run of 5-10 dropped frames) for no apparent reason, but nothing as bad (or as easily reproducible) as when I first reported it.

To be honest my edid is correct theres no 23.971 modes being used and so is my xorg.conf modelines (still from fristch/fernet) so idk what fixes one can apply here.

Ill see if I have time and pateince to go try libreelec and if that fixes something are there patches to kodi one can try instead?
