Intel Apollo Lake
Dennis from technikaffe - one of the serious testing websites in germany - jumped also in: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=98797 - let's see. I am in contact with Jani, too - to speed up testing.

Let's see what we get :-)
First decide what functions / features you expect from a system. Then decide for the hardware. Don't waste your money on crap.

Well I know it would work just not sure how well the guide will perform. I know the app can be resource heavy. It runs a lot better on my current PC (i5 second gen) than it does on any of my Android devices (Amazon Fire Stick gen 2 and Fire TV gen 1).

I guess I'm in your situation and am using a CAYS "upgraded" from a Braswell i5 NUC (specifically for hevc uppprt obviously).
I've been remarkably impressed with the CAYS running Libreelec Vs the i5.
No issues with lagging addons etc except when in 4k resolution for the UI when a video is playing at the same time but I think that's to be expected really on anything except the most high end GPU hardware.

I think if you were to connect your NUC to a friends LG/Sony/higher model number Samsung it would work. I also expect a different 2160p Kodi device such as an Android box you would get 2160p as a display option.

To fix I think we need a new firmware for either the Apollo Lake device or the TV. This may happen in the future but I fear we might be stumped for the short term.

My TV is a UE50KU6000 which looks very similar to yours? Maybe a geographical model variation?

After adding the custom xorg.conf, I have a watched a few movies with success on the NUC with Intel.x86_64-devel-20170210200440-r25167-gd210441 . I am using the optical our for audio for now as I don't have HDMI 2.0/HDCP 2.2 AVR. Only thing I am not able to confirm is if I'm getting HDR or not. My KU6300 has Samsung's "Premium HDR" which is not 100% true HDR.

I'm really pleased with the performance of Apollo Lake though even with the issues I've had. Not stutters or hiccups with 60-70Mbps HEVC 2160p videos.

You won't get HDR, no matter what display. We have 8 bit visuals.

Could you post a copy of your xorg.conf so I can try it on mine please?
