is it possible to have an xbox with xbmc be a NAS with linux?
#1
Hi. Just found a guide on how to install linux on the xbox and use it as a nas with a bittorrent client, but I still want to keep xbmc on it.

From this sub-forum, if xbmc is now working in linux, does that mean I can install linux and have the xbox as a NAS server, and at the same time be able to fire up xbmc and use it exactly how I do now? (i..e there'll be the same output to the tv that's in the normal xbmc?).

Otherwise I'm thinking of buying a second xbox, one converted to nas with linux that downloads everything, and another for xbmc.

No. Xbox linux does not have accelerated GPU access, so it will run slowly.

so what's the point of porting it to linux then? Or are they trying to get the accelerated GPU access?

It's not being ported to Linux to run on the Xbox... but on all the other better documented, more powerful platforms out there.

k can't find the edit button

EDIT: k I think i didn't explain myself properly. I don't need to use the xbox for gaming - so the most intensive thing it will do is play movies. does it still need the accelerated gpu access for that?

Yes. Feel free, however, to build the linux port version on xbox and let us know how it goes.

Basically you should just continue to run XBMC on your Xbox. If you want to buy a second Xbox for NAS, then that is probably the route you want to take. Don't try to do it all in one, it will just buy you misery. Smile
